I am nearly 27 and have been wearing contacts for the past 7 years. I love them....I have astigmatism and my glasses are quite thick. I only wear them around the house in the evenings and on weekends if i am not doing anything....i don't mind the look of them on me, it's the weight of them on my face and that I can see the frames. Also, the fingerprints on the lenses annoys me. If I am cake decorating, I always put my contacts in. I used to think it was gross sticking my fingers in my eyes, but now it doesn't bother me. However, I can't watch my husband and other people put their contacts in...that grosses me out!

When I was in my teens, my Dr put me on the rigid gas permeable lenses so that my eyes wouldn't change so rapidly. I went in for a check up once and he ordered one wrong lens and in the week that I waited for the new one my prescription changed... UGH! Not to mention one speck of dust felt like a mountain! Well, when I started my current job in '99, we were not allowed to wear contacts due to safety reasons so I went back to glasses. About 2 years ago, that rule was changed and my Dr had me try soft contacts and they were amazing. I am now wearing Focus night and days, and have been told to even sleep in them every day. So, I put a pair in and wear them constantly for about 30 days then change them. I might wear my glasses one day a month or so. I couldn't go back to glasses now, I love these. I'm too cheap to put up the $$ for the surgery although I've only heard great things about it.

I agree - it was freezing in there!! I had to go into two different rooms for different lasers and they were both soooooo cold! But again - it was well worth it as I could see better that day and I am 20/15 as well.

Doug - did you think it was painful? I thought it was uncomfortable when they were putting pressure on my eye, but not at all painful.

I do remember though - there were several of us in the center room waiting for our turn. I took some valium and they gave us benedryl as well before the surgery. So we are waiting our turn and they called the guy in before me... and I remember thinking how they didn't give him any drops in his eyes yet to numb them and that maybe I should say something... but I was kind of floating at that point... hahahaha. I did tell them when I went in that I had no drops. Turns out that the drops are so fast-acting that they don't give them to you until you are right there in the chair. icon_redface.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

All I can say is it must have been the drugs!!

I wear both, contacts for most of the day and glasses for 1-2 hours at night. My contacts are: the right one for distance and the left for close up. Worn together I can see close up and far away without having to wear readers. My glasses are the progressive lens and when I do wear those, I really like them.
Oh i started wearing glasses when I was in 4th grade, I'm not 44!

actually no---

surgery itself --- no pain other than freezing cold and I don't like laying on back w/ feet higher than my head!

after surgery -- getting soap in the eye or an eyelash under a contact is FAR more painful. didn't really need the pain meds -- extra strength tylenol was enough. actually felt like how my eyes would feel -- all sandy and itchy -- after wearing my RGP contacts for way too many hours (or accidentally sleeping in them!)

My hubby had Lasik done early last year. He says its the best thing and wondered why he put off doing it for so long. Doctor says he has 20/15 vision! He didn't have any pain at all during the procedure and could see better right away (even with the funny looking glasses to protect the eyes after the procedure).

He used to wear disposable contacts and was too lazy to take them off icon_sad.gif

My dh had the lasik done, and the military paid for it. By the time he got the chance for the surgery, they weren't doing it on spouses anymore. UGH!!

I too have had lasik. Had it done in March of this year. I can honestly say that it was the best money I have ever spent. No pain, just itchy eyes when the numbing drops wore off. And getting to sleep a lot for a few days afterwards was great. I wore contact for 20 years and feel so liberated.

I have 2 teenagers and it was a treat to have them looking after me and fixing dinner for a couple of days. OK, I'll admit it I milked it for all it was worth. icon_wink.gif I figured I wouldn't get too many chances to do so.

All that she said, plus the one thing I hate more than anything else is when it rains, I can't see because it rains all over my glasses. Grrr. I'm one of those people who don't mind getting rained on, and would rather get a little wet walking from the car to the store (for example) than carry an extra bulky item that will be dripping everywhere (umbrella). I've worn glasses since I was in 3rd grade & my parents finally let me get contacts when I started high school. I tried gas-permeable but my astigmatism was sooo bad that they scratched my eyeballs, so I went to regular soft lenses. When torics came out I used them, & did until this spring (I'm 34 now). For some reason this spring my allergies did a number on my eyes, and I haven't been able to wear my contacts since about March. It's honestly not a vanity thing, it's an inconvenience thing for me. And when I'm baking I do notice a coating of flour and/or powdered sugar on my glasses when I'm done!

I'd LOVE lasik but can't afford it. One of these days!

Lisa, I forgot about the rain. Yep, you are right (I'm with you on that whole umbrella thing too, especially ever since I had children. Who needs to carry something extra. I just wear the hood of my sweat jacket or waterproof jacket if it's raining heavy).

I can't wait to do the Lasik. I'll be asking my eye dr. about it at my next visit, but I too don't know if I can afford it quite yet.

I work for an eye doctor, so this is my look on the subject. I suggest both. I wear contacts 95% of the time and glasses the rest (bedtime). The reason for both would be if you get an eye infection or any other problem where you couldn't wear the cls.

As far as the slipping down the nose and the weight of glasses, I always put on silicone nosepads and that prevents slippage and there is also a very nice light weigt poly lens out we put our patients in.

My vote would be for contacts with a cheap pair of glasses as a back up.

I vote for glasses. I tried contacts before and they just weren't for me. I had a heck of a time getting them in and when I was in a hurry would have to lie down on the bed and have my husband put them in for me...not my idea of fun! And then when they were in they drove me crazy. I have bad allergies so my eyes are often itchy and watering...having something stuck to my eyeball was also not my idea of fun!! The only plus to contacts was night time driving...the glare you get from your glasses isn't there so it made night driving easier.

I can understand not wanting wire frames when you have young children. I have 3 kids (5 and under) so my glasses are knocked off/pulled off/bumped into/etc...on a daily basis. I have plastic frames and they have held up wonderfully. In fact, I've had these glasses for a couple years with no problems (knock on wood).

In the end, though, it's personal perference. My husband prefers contacts and rarely wears his glasses.

I don't like being able to have a boundary (the frames) where I can't see past. I don't like how they steam up in the winter and the summer - or even when I open the dishwasher to add something. I hate when they have smudges or fingerprints or scratches. My youngest always inevitabley grabs them from my face. Then there is that slide. And finally, even though I did bite the bullet four or five years ago and buy perscription sunglasses, I hate not being able to just put on my sunglasses and go, especially if I happen to be in the middle of driving and the sun comes out. Then I've got to switch glasses instead of just sporting a pair of sunglasses.

Of course contacts can be a bit annoying, too, but I've been lucky that I can wear them for long periods and even sleep with them and they usually don't bother me, but my eye dr. did tell me it's beginning to catch up with me so I'm beginning to seriously consider laser surgery.

THANK YOU!!! thumbs_up.gif I needed this post! I have been debating too! I HATE my glasses!! icon_razz.gif They are always smudged, scratched, falling off, steaming up, needing to get adjusted, etc., etc.! I just can't take it anymore! I don't even have that bad of vision but these glasses are getting ridiculous! Thanks again! I am going to try contacts...soon! thumbs_up.gif

I'm 44 years old, I've worn glasses since I was 8 and contacs since the age of 10. I prefer my contacs so I don't have fog, sweat drops or icing bits ---- but, when I start getting tired or I quit blinking so they dry out, it's time to take them out and put on the glasses -- which is happening more and more frequently lately.

I was born wearing glasses. Could not get contacts because my eyes were so bad. I agree with everyone that says LASIK SURGERY. Best money I ever spent. I love it. I still have to wear reading glasses for close work but I love being able to see clearly and after 3 years I finally stopped trying to push up glasses (up nose) that were no longer there.

I would so love to get LASIK. I read somewhere that you can only get it if your prescription has remained stable for the past 3 or so years, is that still the case?
It would be wonderful to wake up in the morning and be able to see!

I've been wearing glasses ever since I was eight and I couldn't wear contacts because my eyes get too dry. Now I wear contacts often, but my eyes can't tolerate them too well. The money that I make on my July 21st wedding cake will go for new glasses and contacts. I love to wear contacts, but I can only wear them for a few hours at a time.

Got LASIK done in 2004 and was paid for by FOX television studio in Beverly Hill, CA (I was in the reality TV show). Best thing ever happened to my eyes. Wished I could get it done years ago. My vision is still 20/20 and I'm still pleased with it.

No pain at all, just feeling nervous in the beginning, which I realized it was a waste of my energy. All I feel is a pressure on my eyeball, just like when you close your eye - you use your thumb and press gently on your eyeball. But eyes are open during the whole procedure and you will see like you're underwater with your eyes open. The procedure lasted about 15 minutes each eye.

It is worth it.

Sorry, this post is long... icon_eek.gif

I was told I needed to correct my vision when I was 21, I am now 39. I have always worn contacts during the day, then at night when I get ready for bed, I take my contacts out and put my glasses on. I made sure my glasses were "trendy" and comfortable for those days when I'm too lazy to put contacts in.

I also got tired of "fumbling" with cleaning and caring for contacts so I now wear daily contacts. It's worth the extra cost to me to just get up in the morning, open a new pack, pop them in, and toss them out at night. I am also able to carry an extra pack wtih me in case one gets uncomfortable or I rub my eyes and loose one.

I do hate constantly cleaning my glasses because I can't stand anything blocking my vision, which is another reason I only wear them before bed or on lazy days. Plus I have an astigmatism that isn't correctable with contacts so after the sun goes down, especially driving, I have a bit of trouble seeing in my contacts and prefer my glasses at night.

As for sunglasses, I have a really fashionable pair that actually fit over my glasses when I do wear them and still wrap around my face so you don't see my glasses under them. I get compliments on them even when I don't wear my glasses.

I looked into corrective vision surgery and was told that my vision loss is not severe enough for the surgery (yet I can't see beyond six feet in front of me without lenses icon_confused.gif ).

So, personally, I like my contacts but also like the freedom of having glasses to fall back on.
