Has anyone ever tried strawberry cake from DH with chocolate buttercream? I'm hoping it will taste like a chocolate covered strawberry!

I'm not a big fan of DH's strawberry cake (I think it tastes kind of artificial), but I do think that strawberry cake with chocolate icing sounds yummmmmmmmy!!! thumbs_up.gif

I agree, I don't care for the box mix either - but strawberry cake w/ chocolate icing sounds delicious!!!! ...just like a chocolate covered strawberry!

I made my daughter DH strawberry cake with chocolate bettercream for her birthday and nobody in my family liked it, but I think maybe it was just because of the brand of cake. Not sure.

I doctored the DH strwberry cake by using Strawberry Nectar instead of water. You can get it in a can the size of a soda. I didn't taste it but my customer was pleased with the taste.

Sounds tempting...but artificial- I would rather have a real chocolate covered strawberry icon_biggrin.gif

I've been asking around to the people who are receiving all my practice cakes, and several people actually SUGGESTED "those fake fruit flavored cake mixes". It confused me at first.

So I have a box of DH Strawberry and have been trying to come up with something to do with it.

I think I'm going to try to put real strawberries inside and ice with some whipped cream or Bettercream, something light, so it's sort of like a giant strawberry shortcake. I think I'll drizzle some chocolate on top too now that you mention it! icon_smile.gif

What about a lemon filling? Think that could work?

I had some leftover cake and icing and concocted: white choc cake, choc IMBC filling and iced with strawberry IMBC. Don't know why I did it that way instead of the reverse...... I guess I was trying to fill and ice with choc but didn't have enough.

It was really good. But I'm not too sold on Strawberry flavored cake. If I did make it I might try the Martha Stewart recipe from her Weddings Magazine -- part of the neapolitan cake.

The only time I ever made a DH strawberry cake that I liked, I torted it and filled it with fresh SB filling and iced it with cream cheese icing. Between the SB filling and CC icing, I couldn't really taste the artificial taste of the cake so much. icon_smile.gif

P.S. - czyadgrl ... I think lemon filling would be yummmmmy with SB cake!! icon_smile.gif

I did just that for an anniversary cake (strawberry cake/choc frosting filling/white icing) and it never came back with complaint. I myself don't think it would be that great, but I am pretty finicky about fruit and chocolate together.

I have never made the DH Strawberry but I did make the cherry, YUCK! I would say go with a homemade.

I think the Chocolate strawberry idea sounds way yummy. You might try torting and filling with fresh strawberries and covering it with a chocolate gnash. It would be a more concentrated flavor like an actual chocolate covered strawberry.

For my strawberry cake I don't use the DH Strawberry Cake mix at all. Tried, did not like. Even after I doctored it.
