I have not been doing cakes for several months because it got to be too much with my two young kids (5 and 2) and I have a small kitchen and house. Well, lately I have been approached by two separate people who are interested in starting party planning. They want me to be their cake and cookie person. One of them owns a building with a vacant apartment. She says that if I would agree to help her, she would see about installing an oven in the apartment so that I can become licensed and not decorate out of my house. She says that maybe we can work out a deal where I make cookies for her parties in exchange for using the apartment to bake my cakes.
Although I have missed decorating cakes, I'm really nervous about taking such a big step. I have no real money to sink into anything, and I would have to go at night to bake, decorate when my husband gets home from work to watch the kids. Of course, this is all just in the idea stage right now. I was wondering if anyone else could relate or give insight about getting started.

I'm bumping this.

Also, I have decorated probably a total of a year. Is that enough experience to start a business?

What an awesome opportunity. I say "go for it".
It doesn't sound like you would be out a lot of money, but I would compare the cost of a kitchen with inspections and insurance to the cost of the cookies and how many cookies you will make.

Holy crap!!! Are you kidding me???? Go for it!! I looked at your cakes and they're awesome. You have some major talent and I wish I could do something like that. Go for it. Pray about it first and talk with you hubby, but if this is what the Lord wants you to do, do it. It wil be hard for a couple of months, but you'll get the hang of it.

I'll definitely pray about it. I have that feeling that a door is opening and I need to follow it. I'll have to see....

OMG... I would love an opportunity like this as I know soo many of us here would! It will take a lot of commitment and time but truly I think it would be worth it in the end! You have to start somewhere if this is your passion and this is it! You may never get an opportunity like this again, go for it! You have awesome cakes and cookies.

I too say go for it! I would love an opportunity like that. But then again everyone's situation is different and you have to weigh the pros and cons. But if you really love decorating...I say follow your passions and dreams!!! Good luck! thumbs_up.gif
