..I have never used gumpaste but I have a cake to make in 4 weeks that I think I will need to use gumpaste for based on all I've read about it. I need a simple recipe but I am not finding one on CC altho Im sure its here somewhere. Also I wanted to know like how long will it last and any techniques or tips that will help me make my first structure sucessful. I'm doing a baby crib and want to make nice detailed rails and headboard.

You can use a recipe, or buy it ready made. My preferred recipe is the one posted at nicholaslodge.com

Start as soon as yo can to allow time for drying. If there is humity where you are, it can take forever to dry.

You can also add some tylose to fondant/sugarpaste to make a quick gumpaste. Let me know if you want the quantities, I have it somewhere.

As for how long it will last: wrapped tightly in double layer of cling wrap, it can be frozen or kept in the fridge for months. Just bring it to room temp before you want to use it. Use crisco lightly to make kneading it easier, and to stop sticking. When making baby crib, don't make the panels too thick otherwise it'll take too long to dry; around 2-3mm thick is good. Make and dry each part separately; when dry, attach using stiff royal icing.
Be sure to show us your pics!

If you're looking to make your own gumpaste, I recommend this recipe from Nick Lodge: http://www.nicholaslodge.com/gumpaste.htm

Personally, I prefer buying premade Satin Ice gumpaste which comes in 2lb or 5lb tubs: http://www.intotheoven.com/p1332/5-lb.-Black-Fondant-by-Satin-Ice/product_info.html

Thanks for the info. I have a sense of direction at least. I looked at the website for the satin ice gumpaste and read the label which said 'for decoration' purposes as tho it's indicating it's not 'ideal' to eat. Is it bad tasting? or just impossible to chew on after it dries... icon_razz.gif

It doesn't taste good and dries really hard so it not 'ideal' to eat icon_smile.gif
