my sister is going to do my nephew's bday cake. Here's the thing...she's never made a cake, but she's a really good artist.
Does anyone know if rice paper and edible markers can be used to draw a scene? Or any other ideas?
We don't want to do a BCT or use fondant. I'm trying to think of some way that she can freehand it on the cake.
Thank you
I am also very artistic when it comes to paint on top of cakes, and I have used both. My best results yet come when I prepare a gumpaste plaque (or cover a piece of cardboard/styrofoam material, with fondant), and let it dry very, very well. Then I trace the design, and I start painting on it. People love my designs very much!! I have even gone in the middle of the night, whenever I don't have a plaque available, to a printer and made my copy of the design needed on rice paper in color!! I asked for permission to do it first, so they could see that it was not going to damage their printer, and voila!!!!!! Make sure you seal your design on the rice paper with transparent gel.
Good luck

I think since youre not willing to use a fondant plaque like I suggested to you on messenger.... ....then I vote for you and your sister to do a 3-D Darth Vader head......your nephew would flip! and besides if thats what he wants...why deprive him???
Msines..thank you for your reply. Can you explain more about how you do the rice paper...i've never used it before so I guess im not understanding.I appreciate it.
And Twinsy..well, um...at the very least you bumped the thread up
How about a cocoa painting! She could definitely freehand that on rice paper...
She could colour the cocoa butter with candy colouring and she would be in business!
I can't find my cocoa painting book..bought in on CC...by Marsha Winbeckler..it's great!
yes, rice paper and edible markers can be used to draw a scene. just don't allow the marker to rest on the paper too long...it dissolves. light strokes no heavy handed stuff.
JaneK : thats a good idea...thank you.
All4cake: thank you also...hmmm..she might have trouble with the no "heavy handed" stuff..we were just cracking up because she was coloring with my nephew and kept breaking all of the crayons because she was coloring with some intensity
And Twinsy..well, um...at the very least you bumped the thread up
wellll then by all means here is another bump!
I have a question.....Ive never used rice paper....if it disolves with too much pressure from the marker...will it dissolve once its laid on the icing?
It softens up enough to cut through, but doesn't "melt" seamlessly into the icing like icing sheets will.

I've never placed it directly on icing. I don't know. I've just drawn, written, airbrushed and printed on it. I know what happens when I rub too many times across it with an edible marker....pretty much the same thing that happens when you rub too many times across construction paper with a regular marker...it creates a hole where the wetness weakened the paper. maybe dissolved is not the correct word...but that's what it looks like it's doing...
Thank you both for your help...i appreciate it.
Oh and thanks for the bumps Twinsy girl!!
I have one more dumb question..for anyone who might know the answer -To get an edible image made, can she draw a picture on regular paper with markers or does it have to be like edible markers?
Not sure if this is what you mean exactly, but you can get just about any image copied, all they would have to do is scan/copy the original into their edible image printer and it will print out on the icing sheets. Doesn't matter what the original is made of, as long as it will copy clearly. They probaby won't do disney characters and such, because of copyright laws though. Hope that's what you were asking.

I have placed rice paper directly on the cake using piping gel to secure it (just brush the area where you will be placing the design first-- I also like to airbrush it a bit ), and then I brush the topof the rice paper again with piping gel to secure it, and it has never presented a "problem". I pipe a nice border around it...simple.
When it comes to coloring, I tried to use anything the is FDA approved, because people have a tendecy to test all this stuff. I don't like to take risks when it comes to this, believe me.
Thank you guys very much...you helped alot!! I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.
