Hi CC friends. I"m pretty new to CC and have been pouring over ideas and picking your brains for the last 2 weeks over this cake. I had to deliver this cake about 30 minutes from home yesterday. My DH was an awesome help. He thought that it would be safer to take the bottom 3 tiers already assembled and the other 2 separate on cookie sheets. This cake was pound cake and you know how heavy that is. When he put his hands underneath and picked it up, the plastic bottom plate groaned and bent under the weight. I nearly had a melt down. Next plan was to put it on the wood lazy suzan and carry to the car that way. Along with our son, they got it in the back of my SUV. I wanted to sit in the back of my Xterra indian style hovering over the cake. He insisted on safety first and sooooo I had to sit in back seat with my arm over the back seat holding on to the top plastic column piece to keep it steady. He tried to calm me down and said if it breaks and falls, it's not the end of the world. WHAT???!!!
Off we go. He thought that if he drove 80 mph (on interstate under construction no less) we wouldn't feel the bumps quite so badly ( safety??!!) lol. I slowly and quietly (when he wasn't looking in rear view mirror) turned myself around and folded myself over the back seat and hovered over the cake, willing it to behave. I never ever knew plastic could bend and sway so much without breaking. All the while I'm muttering under my breath why, oh why did I let him talk me into transporting it this way. Anyway, arrived at destination in one piece. By this time, I had a splitting headache and absolutely no feeling in my arms from cutting off the circulation with the death grip!!! I started to assemble and he became the biggest toad in the puddle and added his special touch to the roses. Mind you, he's a 6'4" man's man. How cute!!! We've been married 25 years and he's still the bestest!! I was also at the wedding since the MOB and I are friends. When she and the bride saw it last night they burst into tears. Made it all worthwhile. or did it???
I would have been really nervous about that transport too. Its such a beautiful cake-- you did a wonderful job!!!
my heart was pounding while reading your story...i would have been a nervous wreck. luckily it made it there in one piece...it's beautiful. definately tears of joy from the bride and her mom.
Beautiful cake! Enjoyed your story. Hope the feeling eventually returned to your arms....!!
Your cake is stunning! I am glad to know that I am not the only one that rides in the back with a cake. Like we would even be able to stop it from falling!!!!
Super job!
That is a great cake!! I love it! I have been wanting to use fresh flowers on my cake just like that. Can you tell me how you did it? Thank you. [email protected]. Thank you so much!!
WOW the cake is so gorgeous and elegant!!! No wonder they cried!!
is the feeling in your arms back yet?
you really did a great job!!
Gorgeous cake, done wonderfully. Give your husband a hug and kiss. He sounds a lot like mine...and believe me when I say I'm not a pleasant person when it comes to the safe delivery of one of my cakes!
Congrats on a job well done by both of you!
Beautiful cake! I could totally relate to your story...I get nervous jitters with every wedding cake I do still!
How did you do the monogram letter? Is it store bought or did you make it? Gorgeous!!
I would also like to give you congrat! that is an awsome cake.! How many did it serve? How do you prep to use fresh flowers? Once again great job. If this is your first I can not wait to see the next.
Yes, how did you do the monogram? Your cake is stunning! It sounds like you have a wonderful DH, too!
Gorgeous cake! And a great funny story to go with it! I enjoyed the story AND the photo! Great job!
Aaaah, yes, the Tall Tier stand - isn't it such a joy to work with - not! I swear that thing was designed to cause maximum stress to the cake decorator. I used it for my brownie wedding cake and although it wasn't groaning under the weight, it was swaying way too dangerously for my liking ! Still, it worked out in the end just like yours. I love your cake, so very pretty!
Mocakes, the bride supplied the monogram. It was some type of metal w/legs that pushed it cake. It was covered with red rhinestones. Really added a finishing touch to the cake I think! Thanks so much for all the encouragement.
Lisa
Again, you guys are so supportive. As we were setting it up, I was thinking I really hope the bride likes it, but I hope my CC supporters will be proud of me.
The cake would have fed probably 400 or so. There were approx 200 people there. I made one 12" kitchen cake which was used up. Only the 10" and part of 12" top tiers were used. The cake server cut the servings really small. Not sure why. The brides family took cake home and will be eating it for days.
thanks again!!
Congratulations!!! Beautiful Cake!!!
YOU GO GIRL!!! KEEP ON BAKING!!!
Congratulations to the DH also for the help!!!
Cindy
Beautiful cake!
I love the story and the lovely outcome.
Don'tcha wish there was something superduper special we could do for the supportive/helpful DH's out there??? Like an island in the middle of a stormy ocean, they appear to offer a calmness and security....
Boy, the whole time I was reading your post, it was like I was in the car with you.
Your cake is gorgeous!!! Congrats on your first wedding cake.
I love the red and white wedding cakes. The bride was really lucky she had you do her cake. It is stunning and I am not surprised they burst into tears! Sounds like the biggest toad in the puddle did great too! lol
Awww, I love a happy ending!! I don't blame you one bit for being so nervous. That's a lot of work! Gorgeous cake!
AWWWW....that is such a sweet story and that cake is GORGEOUS!!! your first?! WOW you did fantastic.
You are my inspiration. My daughter is getting married Sept. 9th and I will be making her wedding cake, (my first too) it will feed 350 people. I have to transport an hour and a half. I am transporting assembled. (I've done one trial run).
Oh and I think its awesome that you have a loving supportive husband of 25 years, my hubby and I just celebrated our 26th, and yours sounds a lot like mine.
Congratualtions on a GREAT job!!! What a rewarding experience you had.
Oh and I forgot to mention, I think I have that same cake stand. Did you buy it on E Bay? Does it have roses on it? It looks very elegant, I am anxious to use mine.
Don'tcha wish there was something superduper special we could do for the supportive/helpful DH's out there???
