okay cake friends,

i posted an add on craigslist.com awhile ago.....after reading about it here. anyway i had some intrest, and have one wedding cake order for next month!!!! yeah!! this would be my first paid wedding cake
i posted that i am wanting to build my portfolio, so i am willing to give huge discounts...limited time offer. anyway, the brided is happy that she gets the cake she wants and can afford it, and i get the experience of a real wedding cake job. (i've made several for class, and several for practice, and dummies just for the pictures).
now, that may not be what all of you are looking for, but i feel that it is a win-win situation for me.
try it, its free to post on there.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like it is a win-win situation for both you and the bride. thumbs_up.gif Make sure you stick to your guns and it remains a limited time offer though. You don't want to sell yourself short. icon_smile.gif

I have been wanting to to do this. but have been worried that I could get in trouble for making cakes without an inspecton/permit for anyone. would craigslist be considered advertisment and would making something "at cost" be a sale??

Advertising is not what breaks the law.....making cakes in a kitchen that's not licensed is. IMO when you advertise you are giving the health inspectors something to look at....and find.

Agreed on making sure you make a big deal of the 'limited time offer' - even have an end date- and make sure to pull that off when you've decided to end it- make note of anywhere you ever advertise- always have that list somewhere it wont get lost- create an advertising folder in your cake folder- that stuff comes back to haunt you otherwise

also agreed on doing it right the first time- I mean a lot of people make cakes out of their homes - i would hope that's all done word of mouth- you dont want to start advertising and get in all sorts of legal mess.
Money is sometimes the issue for not getting legal, other issues I'm sure too but it always pays in the end to do it properly. I dunno that's what I was taught growing up and I try to live by that as an adult.

I was editing/giving input on an informational CD that was being put out for a small new charity. The largest part of the 'info/history was mostly plagiarised from a book and there was a movie/with soundtrack dubbed in in the background.
I said (nicely) you cant do this- that's total copyright infringement and plagiarism, you need to A)rewrite the story from the book in your own words, and b) contact the distributor/producer of the movie and get permission to use footage'
'oh well it's only informational CD, not like we're selling it.'
'That doesnt matter, it's still illegal- and why when you're starting out would you wantto do something illegal and have it come back and bite you in the ass? You're trying to establish yourself as a credible organization. Do it properly the first time even if it takes months to hear back from the film people (which it did).
She said that the guys who did the CD in the first place are professionals (and they are, they have a legit business) and they said it didnt matter. Well just because they're in business, doesnet mean they're being ethical either. But if you want to put this CD out the way it is then you go right ahead but I'm not on board, and I'm not doing anymore contract work here as I refuse to have my name attached to anythign that isnt done above board.

Anyway just my 2 cents lol

Which category did you advertise on craigslist.com? I think that is a great idea and would like to try that myself but can not figure out which category to use.
