i have an upcoming stacked 2 tier cake to do. For a small wedding, for about 40 people. i was thinking of a 12 inch, and 9 inch. would that be more than enough for 40 people? i want to have enough then not enough. has anyone done a tier those sizes that feeds about 40 people?

thanks!

Here's a link to the chart from CC that shows the number of servings for different size/shape cakes: http://www.cakecentral.com/article14-Cake-Baking-Cutting--Serving-Guide---2-in-Deep-Pans.html

9" and 12" cakes will serve 32+56=88.

Also, a 9" for the top tier will be too wide so your stacked cake will look flat.

How about a 6" and 10"? That will serve 12+38=50.

Don't forget that most people save the top tier for their first anniversary.

I usually make a 6", 5", 4" three tier cake. The chart provided does not give servings for the 5 and 4 inch tiers.
What do you all suppose this cake would serve?

thnx. the servings on that site seem a bit small/thin. im familiar w/this family and they are pretty generous when it comes to cake. but i do agree the 9 inch might be too wide for the top tier. maybe i should go w/an 8 inch.
thnx everyone.

Here are all four Wilton cake preparation/serving charts for 2 & 3" pans:

http://www.wilton.com/cake/cakeprep/baking/times/index.cfm

The average wedding slice is 1x2x4, but you can also use the party size slice of 1-1/2x2x4.

If the bride opts for larger than normal serving sizes you might want to adjust the cost per slice.

Here's Indydebi's simplified cutting guide:
