Hello, which is the best way to ice the cookies? I want to make a cookie bouquet for my baby's first birthday. I am looking for advice on the best icing. I want to know if I should use: fondant, MMF, Buttercream, Rolled Buttercream, Royal Icing. Please give me suggestions.

I also want to know if I make it with any of these icings, can I make the cookies and decorate them 2-3 days in advance and will they be fine for 3 days later. Will anything spoil?

Thanks.

I think it is all a matter of opinion. Me personally, I use buttercream on all of my sugar cookies. However, I think that most people on this site use Royal Icing for their sugar cookies. I know if you use buttercream they will be fine! Good Luck and happy baking!

If I use buttercream will it dry or will it stick to the bag i wrap it in? If I have to go with fondant which one is the best one to apply to the cookies w/o taking away from the cookie taste? I rather not use royal icing since the cookies can feel hard, unless someone has a different opinion?

When you make your cookies and put buttercream on them do you place them in the bags? I didn't know if they would smear or not? I would like to try too.

Oh man, if I had a nickel for every time I've read this question... icon_lol.gif LOL. It really is all a matter of opinion. If you do a search in the cookies forum for best icing, i'm sure tons of threads would pop up.

My suggestion to you: TRY THEM ALL (or at least as many as you can until you've found "the one") !!! icon_razz.gif They've all got special qualities about them and you're bound to like one more than another, so good luck to you and post some pictures of your accomplishments! We'd all love to see them! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

I prefer royal icing - i just do not put it on very thick and make my cookies thick (thus nice ratio of frosting to cookie) No problem with No Fail and Royal if made three days ahead ( and they hold up nice in the bag)

I always ice my cookies with buttercream so they're softer, and then bag em. They haven't smeared yet, but they do seem to get even softer once they're bagged (moisture from the b/c?), so they might break easier. I iced in royal icing the first time and thought they came out too hard, but its all a matter of preference. Good luck!

I just made a cookie bouqet this week and I used royal icing. I made the cookies on monday and iced on tuesday. I gave the bouquet wednesday night but tasted one first and they were great. I made the cookies thick with a thin layer of frosting and the cookie was still nice and soft and no breakage when I brought them. lol I use a handicap scooter to get around and thought with all the holes and bumps in the sidewalk I would have trouble but I'm happy to say nope lol btw it was my frist cookie bouquet and proud to say that with all the help I got from you lovely folks here it was a resounding success lol Thank you one and all from the bottom of my heart. I LOVE this place

I agree with Tayesmama, try as many different recipes as it takes to find the perfect one for you. I have tried recipes where people SWEAR it is the best BC or RI and when I try it, it's like,"what were they thinking?" It just didn't work out for me. So it make take a little time but I am sure you will find the right one for you thumbs_up.gif

Yes I do put them in bags. I let them sit out on a cookie sheet over night to let the buttercream dry. Then you can stack them or put them in bags, you just need to make sure the buttercream is dry first.
