I've done this 100 times now, but I'm just wondering what you do. I've got a wedding cake next month, (3 tiered/stacked), and I'm just wanting to try something different, but want other opinions first.

I always put a cake board under my bottom tier and then place the cake on the base (in this case it's the square silver plated, footed stand), but then I end up with this 1/4 inch of cake board that I always have to deal with.

Do any of you just put your bottom tier directly onto the base for the cake?

I usually put a cake board under my bottom cake, but just a really small one. Because it is going on a base it doesn't really need a thick cake board under it. I use these carton cake boards, very thin, not so handy do deal with, but I put it under the cake and lift it carefully with another board and put it on the base like that.

Good luck with your wedding cake!!

You could try a cake board that is cut to the exact size of you bottom layer.

I would never put the cake directly on the base simply because you risk damage to the base when the cake is cut.

I put the cake on the same size board as the cake, then when i ice the cake you don't see the board, and if you do its covered by the boarder.

For the bottom tier, I use a board the same size of the cake. This way, it gets covered by the bottom border.

I agree with what others have said ... I put the bottom tier on a board of the same size. thumbs_up.gif

but if you dont have a base to put the cake on would you still use the same size cake board as the cake? i usually use the cake board as the main base, as long as it's sturdy enough.

If there's no cake stand/base to put the cake on, then I double or triple the boards for the bottom tier and use boards that are at least 2 inches (preferably 4 inches) larger.

Thanks for all the input! I guess I won't worry about this question any more -- board on the bottom it is! I will use a thinner board though.

Thanks again!

I always use masonite boards for the bottom. They're very thin, but also very sturdy. You can order them pre-cut from CK Products in squares up to 16 or 18" and rounds up to 20". Really handy. I also insist on getting them back after the wedding so I can use them several times, just re-wrap them in whatever color foil I need!
