I am having a heck of a time getting this information... I realize in CA there is no licensing for home bakers but what about renting commercial kitchen space? ( can you tell I watch Recipe for Success?)

How do I go about it? Do I get a "business" license for the name and then rent the space? Does the space need to be inspected or will the existing health inspection suffice? I appreciate any help on this because I am trying to do this the right way icon_smile.gif

I can answer based on what happens here, but you know California is 'different'.
You can apply for a registered business name for your business. I am guessing your secretary of state's office is the entity for this.
You can create a business name and not raise any red flags-until you sell something.

I allowed a couple of personal chefs to rent my kitchen for a while. The health department required an inspection for each 'business'. If you find a kitchen that already has a license, you most likely will be able to get a license with the same space.

Most likely, they have an application for licensing. your situation might be different, since you will not be directly serving the public, so you may be able to get a break on the cost.

I would call the county/city health department and ask about getting a license for your small business in an existing space.

Good Luck and have patience.

Thanks for your advice... I will try to get a hold of them ASAP. I didn't realize I could get the business license without the kitchen space setup. I am pretty sure the license is only $15... and then I can find out about the kitchen space icon_smile.gif You are giving me hope... thank you.
