If someone wouldn't mind taking a look at some of my photos? I'd like to get honest opinions from my "cake peers" LOL. I'm considering pursuing this cake business idea of mine. DH wants me to work part time to be home for DS after school. This would mean leaving a job I've had for 9 years with a pretty good salary. I will need to get a part-time job and it would be nice to supplement that income. From comments I've gotten from people who've had my cakes, they all tell me I should go into business. Easier said than done! So, I'm asking you, my CC peers, to please take a look and be honest - is this something I could make a go at? Sometimes I wonder if everyone's just being nice. icon_smile.gif

Thank you!

Your cakes are great looking. I think you would do great at it. They are far from the usual grocery store cakes. Good luck if you decide to pursue that avenue!

wow, your cakes are great
I do not have the talent that you have and I could not wait to open my own homekitchen( I need to close my garage and I need all the commercial equipment). I am saving some money, I don't want to finance the whole thing.

I am baking cakes in order to stay home with my two girls, and the same time make some money.

so, go for it don't be scare

You have nothing to worry about. icon_smile.gif I think your cakes look wonderful! Any time you can give a "personal" touch to a cake, people eat it up........Walmart or other bakeries just cannot offer that type of cake. It looks like you put your heart into each cake you decorate and that's what makes a successful cake business. icon_smile.gif
Best of luck to you!

Ok I am going to be totally honest with you. I looked at every cake pic you have posted and have to say you are definetly ready. I don't think mine looked that good when I started selling out of my home. It is still really hard trying to make an income because I am for the most part word of mouth. I am licenced but advertising would make me broke. I made flyers and put them at kid party places like playlands and bowling allys. To my suprise that has worked out the best. It gets the parents to go to your website (if you have one). Good luck! You'll do great. Also thier a sooooooo many threads on this subject that can help you also. thumbs_up.gificon_wink.gif

You've definately got what it takes as a decorator--go for it!

Your cakes look great. Go for it if you feel that you are ready for it. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks if your ready then go for it. if not then wait a bit and just do the cakes how you have been doing them. You can always sell them they are very very good!!!!

The talent is definitely there. thumbs_up.gif May I suggest you do a feasibility study first, however. Figure up the costs involved with operating at the scale to which you would have to operate to make up for lost income. Be sure to take into consideration all the $$ you would be saving by NOT going to work outside the home (i.e. gas, child care, lunch expenses- if you buy meals out while working, clothing if uniforms are involved, etc.) Go to the library and/or check websites re. starting a home-based business. Be brutally honest when coming up with figures! I tend to think this is where people fail when first starting out. Many think "Sure, I can do this." without fully preparing for it. Do you have a back up plan and/or savings for those lean months? Do you have the dreaded "B"- aka budget? Can you do this now w/o going into a lot of debt or will you have to borrow money? Will you advertise? If so, will that get you into trouble either w/added expense or with the health dept.? I'll again state, your cakes appear to be quality, now just honestly figure out the rest.

As for part-time employment, my cousin's wife started a cleaning business to get the hours she needed to be at home when their children were at home. Her part-time operation has already got to the point where she's asked another mom to help her out and she's only be at it less than a year.

Sorry so long, just would like to see you make this venture work. icon_smile.gif

Gee, I can't believe there are so many responses! I thank you all for taking the time to take a look. I really appreciate all your comments - friends & family Have to be nice LOL. I also appreciate the advice about figuring out costs. I had started working on a budget b/c I can't see leaving my current job w/o working on the numbers first (and DH has no clue on finances). icon_smile.gif

Gretta gave you good advice another thing you have to do is make family and friends understand that even tho you are at home it is still a job and they need to respect that and not expect you to be available all the time.

I agree with everybody. Your cakes are fantastic and you do it all: buttercream, fondant, figurines, flowers, 3D cakes, etc.

Make sure you charge good prices for your cakes, DO NOT UNDERPRICE!!! icon_confused.gificon_confused.gificon_confused.gificon_confused.gif

Sometimes it's easy to do them cheap so people will buy them but think of all the time it takes to make a cake... time away from your child.

I wish you all the best and I if you decide to stay home, enjoy every minute with your little one!!!!!! (I'm jelous!!! icon_rolleyes.gif )

OK, we keep piggy backing but I agree with this. They will believe that since you are at home you can take on every extra project that comes along because you have "nothing to do" (i.e. church meetings, planning family get togethers, PTA, etc.) Also, establish who you will charge and how much. As others will tell you, family are really good about expecting your creations for nothing or next to it. Trying to help you ward off all those "items" that tend to get overlooked. icon_smile.gif I guess I am living vicariously through you because I would love to do this but know that it is not in the cards right now.... for everything there is a season. thumbs_up.gif
