Hi-

I was wondering if some of you perceptive souls out there would mind looking at my website and offering constructive criticism. I've noticed that some other members have done this, and have really felt it was helpful, so I'm taking the plunge.

TIA-

Hey Karateka!

I just looked at you website and I really like it! It is very elegant and easy to look around. I would just expect to see pictures of your cakes, I love the one on the homepage but I looked around I couldn't find any extra pictures. I think customers would love to see samples of your cakes, that's what catch their attention. Other than that I like it a lot. I really like the fact that you gave them an idea of your pricing.

Good job! thumbs_up.gif

Looks good, I would put a gallery of cakes on there. To show customers what your cakes look like. Do a gallery for cupcakes and cookies as well.

my two cents, anyway

Hi Karatekana -
Loved your website - the colors are easy on the eyes, the type that you chose is nice and clear - and the general 'feel' of it is friendly, yet factual.

The only thing you might want to add is some disclaimer about peanut-allergies or wheat-allergies, etc. - I know there are lots of folks who are allergic to this or that...

In particular, I think the way you anticipate various questions is great! You've obviously been asked many of the same questions over and over, and you've thoughtfully answered a lot of the basic ones.

Most folks would look for a gallery link on the main page, although I did find the link on your Products page at the bottom... and if you don't want folks copying your pics from your gallery, you might find some way to 'lock' the pics - I've seen many websites that have them locked.

Best of luck in your venture - I envy you more than I can say - I am still at the 'baking for anyone and everyone I can' stage, although I am now in the Wilton I class (with DH!)

I think the site looks great. It's very clean, uncluttered and the colors are nice. The only thing I'd do differently is to add a link on the first page for your gallery, and I'd probably not include the personal information, especially about the pets. A lot of people are turned off about the idea that pets might be in or around the kitchen. They can find out about your pets if they visit your home. It's not being deceptive, it's just keeping the customer's mind on what's important - your cakes.

I'm impressed with your web site!

I like the colors, and also--the way your policies/procedures are explained are really great. It allows the customers to understand very well.

Good luck on your business, I'm sure you're going to do great!

Elegant Site. Only things I can see that I would change:

Home page description - cottage foods bakery? Your tagline says from your kitchen to theirs. I think it is a little conflicting. I don't think when people think of bakery, they think of a home based baking company.

I would do categories or category pics on main page. Upon entering your site customers can then select where they want to go.

Save the "schpill" on the home page for the "about us" page.

Set up a page which gives the customer more information about when they contact you for an order. Meaning, if deposits are required, if so then how much. Also, a policy on cancelled orders and workable lead time for your orders. If you charge extra amount of $$ for last minute/rush orders.

Definitely as someone stated before, have a disclaimer for those with wheat, nut, dairy allergies.

Not sure about the pic in the top hand corner. I would insert my own stock photo there or logo, if you have one prepped already.

Also, really think about the look and audience you are trying to grab. To some people the word "home" means that your cakes should be really, really cheap or that not as much work would go into it. For others it may mean a more personal experience with cake orders. Maybe you can reword the phrase some?

Also, if you can find a form for customers to fill out to email you, that would be great.

That's all for now, sorry if it seems like a lot.

To make it look a little more professional, I'd add title to your web site. (You know, in the very top, left-hand corner of your browser.) Right now, it just says title.

You could put The Icing on the Cake, or something else.

The html would look something like this for the very beginning of your site:

<html>
<head>
<title>The Icing on the Cake</title>
</head>

....and then the rest of your information.

Hope that helps!

Thanks to all of you, this is just what I needed. I can delete the personal stuff.

As to the picture in the upper left of the home page, it was the best one available. I might be able to design my own and use it, but in the meantime, it was either that, veggies, chefs chopping veggies, or a restaurant scene.

I'm going to create a new page for my gallery, so everyone will see the tab on the home page. I had put it on the products page since they are my products, but I guess it is sorta small and invisible.

I mentioned home bakery because that's what I am, and I don't want there to be any misunderstanding about who/what they are hiring. I think I might keep that one, simply so everyone knows up front what they get. I mean, Earlene of Earlene's cakes baked out of her home for years, right? It's nothing to be ashamed of.

I really need to be more computer literate, it would help with the logo thing.

I really appreciate all of your comments, I knew you guys would be honest and constructive, thanks!!

I agree with everyone so far. The site looks great, is very friendly and inviting. But do put your gallery link on the first page or in it's own separate spot with a button to click on to get to it. If someone is just generally looking at sites, they may not see that your gallery link is on your products page and they may never get to look at your cakes before making a decision whether or not to choose you to make their cake. Maybe call the products page something more specific like FLAVORS and then put a GALLERY link all on it's own.

By the way, your Tiffany lamp cake is STUNNING. I couldn't stop looking at it! I have no idea how you did it, but WOW!!!

ok, my bad, I didn't see the reference to home bakery. Is that waht the "cottage bakery" mmenas? LOPL, my bad. I'm from the south and don't use the word cottage much. Can I ask what web software are you using? Maybe look for a template that allows you to have a setup where the home page shows 4 different cake categories : wedding, birthday, specialty and whatever other baked goods you offer. Intra-site search mechanisms are another plus, that allows customers to search what they want - like chocolate or strawberry, etc...

One last thing, for the feel your site has, I think the Title font doesn't quite match it. If you have graphics editing software, you can make your own logo. You can even make one in Microsoft Publisher. Then just save it. There are some free graphics editing softwares like Zerif and shux, one other one, but I can't remember it off hand. Or play with free trials of some at www.cnet.com . If you can get your hands on Macromedia Fireworks, that would be a good one too.

littlemissmuffin:

Wow, you really seem to know your stuff. I'll admit, my head is starting to swim. And if I don't get off the computer soon, my husband is going to have a coronary.

I did make some changes, added a gallery page and put it's tab right under the home tab. I've searched all during the last hour trying to find a generic page that looks good, but no dice. Maybe if I can get someone computer savvy, they can help me with a product like frontpage, but for now this will have to do. I'll check into the font thingie tomorrow.

I deleted the personal stuff. Added hours of operation for making appointments, allergy disclaimer, cancellation policy, rush policy. I will have to think on the home page some more.

The cottage foods thing is the technical term in Ohio for the type of business this is, so I wanted to incorporate that into the site for legal reasons, so nobody could ever say I was misrepresenting myself. I'm sorta paranoid like that. I never used the term before I opened up for business, either.

ckkerber: thanks so much! It's always nice to hear such nice things about one's work. It's actually not at all hard to make, if you want the instructions, let me know and I'll pm them to you.

Trust me I know websites are a pain. I have fooled with mine enough to have a little info about it. Websites are a constant work in progress, they are never really "done". They evolve just like a business does.

I don't know Frontpage at all so I can't help you on that frontier. My main place of practice is with ZenCart.
