Hi! I don't know if this is silly...but I always like to take a green or flowering plant as a housewarming gift! I think plant liven up the place! 
Anyway...you could do a cake like a flower pot and either do sugarpaste leaves (like a fern) or some flowers...would be SO cute! It doesn't have to be elaborate...just sweet! Or...you could do little pots with plants on top of a cake?? Good luck!

I did a flower-pot cake for a friend's housewarming. The flower pot was three 6 inch layes stacked, carved slightly at the bottom and covered in fondant. The top was a thin layer of oreo cookie crumbs. And the flowers were made from no-fail cookies on sticks.
You could use the wilton stand up house pan. Or a round cake and use the basketweave tip and put flowers on top (icing, fondant whatever) to make it look like a basket of flowers. Going off the plant theme mentioned above as a typical housewarming gift.
I made a house for my sister, they just bought a house.
It doesn't look the best, but it ressembles their house, except it is in better shape.

I did fondant plaques on a cake. Just make your plaque what ever size you want.. Then I just got some water and little bit of brown color dye and rubbed it on with a napkin onto the plaque (after it dried for a couple of days) to give it a antique look.. and used some royal icing for the border.. And on one I used royal icing for the address and the sold sign. I also used gold dust on the border. The other one I just took there name and address from their invitation and laminated it and attached it to the plaque with a royal icing. it was so easy!!!
I added the grapes because both of the families were doing grapes in their kitchens.

I did this cake last weekend for a housewarming party my boss was having. I'm like sharibearie, I like to give plants as housewarming gifts, so this was really fitting. The lucky bamboo plant is supposed to be a gesture of good luck for your home, so the sentiment is nice as well.

I used BriansBaker's idea of the plaque for a housewarming cake I made a few months ago. It was super simple (all buttercream), but everyone loved the idea. I really believe that one of the advantages to CC is that there are so many fabulous minds at work here, you can always find one or two things in the forum to spark your creativity!
