If you had to choose between these two books....

If you had to choose between Cakes by Design by Scott Clark or Lesley Herbert's Complete Book of Sugar Flowers (for those of you who make gumpast flowers), which would you choose? Or do you have another favorite? I am just beginning to work with gumpaste--I made gerbera daisies for the first time for practice, and I love it. I would like to learn a variety of flowers (more of the Spring-type of flowers, not exotic flowers at this point). Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks.

I have ordered Scott's book and it should be here in a couple of days. I'll let you know what I think of it.

I havent seen herbert's book (but now I'm going to look at it lol). I did take Cakes by Design out of the library forlike 2 months and I love it- now mind you I have no experience with flowers (yet) but I used his book for something and the instructions were simple and thorough.

I have a trained background in writing things like instructions- and it's all fine and well if you are an expert at something but if a person, professional or not, can't follow your instructions, then there is no point in writing a book lol. (like you see often happens is some in between steps are left out because they are second nature to the individual)(That being said, it's no easy task being a SME (Subject Matter Expert) and trying to think of every little thing a person might need to know to teach toicon_smile.gif

I actually have both books. If you like actual photos and really detailed instructions Lesley's book is the way to go. Scott's book is good as well, but he uses illustrations a lot, whereas Lesley uses actual photos.

Thanks for the help with my decision. I wish our local library had more of a variety of cake books, but they have pretty old ones, and not the best selection. I have always gotten nothing but great advice from CC, so thank you. I appreciate any other info, too! thumbs_up.gif

I have both books. I prefer Lesley's book as it has more pictures of the finished flowers in very elegant sprays. Scott's book has more pictures of cakes, and has more pages.

I have both and prefer Lesley's. If you should decide to really get into making gumpaste flowers I would choose any book by Alan Dunn over any other flower designer. His attention to detail, his instructions and tips are so good. I have never seen a flower he has made that I haven't thought was perfectly done.
