I'm new to cake decorating and was planning to just use a boxed cake recipe. I've never had any luck making cakes from scratch. I've read a lot of posts that indicated people use the box cakes but they "doctor" them up. What do you add to the mixes? I don't even have a clue what I would even add so I'm clueless I guess! Thanks.
Check out this thread for ideas!

I add:
1 cup sour cream
1 exta egg
milk instead of water
1/4 cup sugar
1 extra teaspoon of vanilla
1/3 cup oil (if the recipe says add a certain amount I don't add the 1/3 cup, I just add what is calls for)
That's it!
tcturtleshell, could this cake mix extender be added for any type box cake mix, such as yellow, chocolate, white etc, thanks
Thanks for the recipe and the link. I went to the link but they really only talked about adding milk in place of water, a few suggestions on sour cream and mayo (ick). But there was a post that never got answered. If anyone has an answer to this question I would like to know - thanks.
"I believe I used butter instead of oil. Do I start with a pudding cake mix, oil cake mix or butter recipe cake mix? What brand of cake mix did you use? I prefer Duncan Hines, but I will use Bettry Crocker in a bind or to try a new flavor they might have."
So many things can be added to mixes...fruit, pudding, extracts, nuts, ice cream...Might want to pick yourself up a copy of the Cake Mix Doctor.
Here's my favorite from the "Cake Mix Doctor" book.
1 box of white cake mix
3 eggs
1 cup milk
1 stick butter
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
You should invest in this book. It is truly worth the cost. Only $15.
Well, I am not a huge fan of cake mixes and the main reason is that I find them mostly sicky sweet. Particularly the white and marble. That is part of the reason I replace the water with whole milk as I find it cuts down on the overly sweet taste. So I am curious as to why you add an extra 1/4 cup of sugar oh Turtlelady? Do you find them not sweet enough?
Just curious.

Thank you Agent Cake Baker! I will invest in the book!!
