Hello.....I am doing this cake. It is from Martha;s wedding mag pg88...can you pleae tell me what size you think it is? I thought org it was 4 inches apart...now I think 2 inches...
I told the bride that 10, 12 and 14 would be best...Cause you cut off the sides...I didnt' want the top layer to be too little for flowers...
What do you think? I org told her 8,12 and 16...now realized way to much cake so we decided to go with the other...10,12,and 14.
Also, HOW would I put fondant on those corners??? Any tips PLEASE!!!
Well, it looks to me like there is 2" on each side difference between tiers, so that would be 16", 12" and 8" and I guess 4" tall. What I would do is cover the cake with fondant panels to get the sharp edges/angles. Just measure the sides and cut your fondant pieces, let them dry a little and attach them with buttercream. You can do some kind of beading border around the unions (where they meet), maybe a tip 2? HTH. Beautiful cake, good luck!
I agree it does look like 2 inches, 10-12-14 looks good to me. Know ideas on the fondant besides smoothing it down slowly with your hands/fingertips. I hope I helped some.
The actual hexagon pans from Wilton are 6,9,12,15. And the serving for each are:
6 - 12
9-22
12-50
15-72
Hopefully, that helps you some with sizes vs. servings. Not that Martha used Wilton pans but it seems to be the average. If I had to cover them I would lay a large circle of fondant over the cakes (like normal) and then cut the corners till they match ... panels scare me! You would then add the bead border. Good luck!
Ive done this cake, I did a 4" difference in the cakes to give it the graduation for the same look. As for fondant...tricky over an oblong hexed off cake, but I just put it on the same way I usually put fondant over a cake and smooooooooth carefully as to not tear with all the corners. I thought of doing it in sections but was worried if the weather was to stay warm they could slide down in the heat! Hope this helps in some little way!
This cake was very popular a few years ago. If I remember correctly, they are made from square cakes with the corners chopped off, giving the hex shape. It looks like there is 4" difference between the tiers as each side protrudes from the next by half of the tier height=2".
I would do 8-12-16 and if that's too much cake, make one of the tiers in styrofoam.
i have video of this cake being, made and it was covered in buttercream.
I don't know if that helps at all. I can rewatch the video and see if i can help you more. You can contact me through pm. if you would like
