ugh..im so dissapointed in myself. this is my step daughters b-day cake, and its awful. i know no one would tell me that, but when i look at it, i know in my heart i could have done better. the writing is horrible and the colors clash. and it didnt even taste very good..it was dry for some reason. ive been really stressed this week, and the whole time i was trying to work on it , my 4 month old was screaming every 20 min. oh well..heres to next time trying a it harder.

Please don't be so hard on yourself....The cake is quite nice actually, and I wouldn't say that if it was ugly! It is hard to decorate with kids around..a little one at that but it can become cumbersome to get motivation when stressed and tired. The next one you do will be better and better....It looks great!! Cheer up!!
Hey, you should not be so hard on yourself! It is not ugly. You have beautifully smooth icing and your borders are perfect as is the butterfly. Writing takes ALOT of practice!!! Believe me, I have seem much worse.
I don't think it's ugly at all but I'm sorry it didn't turn out the way you imagined. That's happened to me before too where I knew I could have done better or at least wished I could have I like the colors, the border, the height and the FBCT especially.
I don't think it's ugly either. Your icing is very smooth. I like colorful cakes. I think you did a great job. I have a two year who is definitely going through the terrible two stage. It is very hard to decorate with kids around. Don't beat yourself up about it.
I think it looks good. I made a cake once that I wasn't happy with at all and it turned out that people really liked it. I try to keep the perspective that most people are only used to the grocery store cakes so they are impressed with anything that exceeds that.
I agree- don't be so hard on yourself . I like your borders a lot and think the butterfly is really nice! And your writing isn't that bad, really it's not. I know how it is to be stressed and on top of it have things not work out the way you envisioned, but I'm sure your step daughter appreciated it. Chin up and keep at it- there's always another cake!

Mom to a stepdaughter and a 4 month old - you are a Wonder Woman in your own right - the cake is lovely, and I'll bet your stepdaughter loved it. The butterfly is gorgeous, and your reverse scrolls are perfect too - truly!
Each and every cake we make for family is always a work of love - and there is nothing more beautiful than something you've fashioned for your loved one just because you wanted to please them.
Maybe thats naive, but thats what my DH said once when I was aggravated/disappointed by something I had made for one of my boys.
Take heart and be proud!

You have fallen into the Superwoman trap! You are being way tooooo hard on yourself!! It looks great! Your icing is super smooth and the colors compliment each other. Take a look at it tomorrow and you'll see what we all see-a great cake!
I have had cakes turn out not quite like I wanted....usually because by the time I had done I was so tired! THen the recipient just raved about it!
Your cake is fine! I just promise myself to take more time with the next one if I dont like the finished product...... Keep up the good work!!!
I agree with everyone else - the borders are perfect - I wish I could do that border so well; the butterfly - is it a FBCT? - looks beautiful; super smooth frosting; nice touch with the comb on the sides; writing is not that bad - I have seen and done much worse!!!!! I bet your stepdaughter loved it too!! It just didn't turn out the way you envisioned. We have all been there. So cheer up - eat some cake (if it's dry just eat the frosting!!LOL ) and look ahead to your next cake. Happy Baking!!!!
I like it, and the colors don't clash, they're just bright which is perfect for a girl.
I love your border! And the butterfly is perfect. You did a really great job. Try not to be so hard on yourself. I have a 2 year old and 1 year old, so all my decorating is in the middle of the night, I end up scraping things off and re-doing a ton of times because I'm tired and confused.
Your stepdaughter will treasure that cake forever. It is obvious that a tremendous amount of love and care went into it. It is BEAUTIFUL.
I have pictures of the cakes I made for my girls when they were little, 20+ years ago ... I was proud of them at the time, now think they are all quite pitiful ... but the girls LOVE those cakes, still. They absolutely treasure the pictures of my first attempts at cakery ...
Your stepdaughter is a lucky girl.
(And I don't know how in the world you did it with a fussy 4-month old, besides!!!)
I think it looks fine. You can tell alot of work went into it. I am sure she loved it.I agreethat when your tired or have distractions you think it's all wrong. Again the cake is great! Good job!
Treys...I read your post then scrolled to see your pic and my first reaction was " What in tarnation is she talking about....!?" This is not a cake I'd call awful- far from it. (If you want to see awful look at MY pic !!! THat will make you feel much better!) I can surely empathize with the way you feel....I've been so discouraged at times. I think it's a common bond we all have and bound to happen every once in awhile. Your way to hard on yourself....so pick yourself up by your apron strings and try try again!!
Really? You think your cake is ugly? Oh my. Please don't look at my cakes then. LOL
I don't know how long you have been at this cake decorating stuff but I think you did a very nice job.
I'm new and I know my work isn't 1/2 as nice as some of the people here but then again I know the people that get my cakes wish they could do 1/2 as nice a job as I do.
There will always be someone who does better then we do but their well be way more who can't even come close.
I'm sure your step daughter didn't look at it and think "I so wish the writting on my cake was better". I have a feeling she looked at it and thought " What a beautiful cake my step mom made me!"

I love that cake!
The border is amazing and STRAIGHT! The icing is very pretty and SMOOTH. Your butterfly is PERFECT. I wish my handwriting looked that good...
Very nice. Seriously!

I don't see anything wrong with it. I think you did a great job. I love the bright colors. When I make a cake that I think is totally ugly everyone raves about how beautiful it is. Remember, we are our own worst enemy.
aww..thanks ladies..yall are very sweet im glad to know im not the only one who decorates in the middle of the night! in addition to the little fuss pot, i have an 18 month old and a 6 yr old..so its usually after nine before i get to start on anything.
i guess its it not the most horrid cake ive ever seen..considering ive read the whole worst cake post
I really like it actually. I love the butterfly, your icing is super smooth and your border is great!!! I don't think the colors clash at all. I bet everyone loved it!!
I really like it too!
I think the colors look good together and the butterfly is really cute!
How did the birthday girl like it??
I really like that butterfly - is that one of these FBCT things? I haven't come across then in the UK and am still trying to pluck up courage to have a go at one. Honestly - I think it's gorgeous and the colours on the butterfly are so vibrant.
Like the butterfly....pretty colors...and believe me your writing is sooooo much better than mine....I am my worst critic when it comes to cake and any crafts I do.....It really is pretty.....
