OMG I am really laughing out loud.... OF COURSE!!!!!! I am bringing a Chambord cake roll. Its a new recipe I came up with, derived from a recipe on the Godiva chocolate website.
Its a chocolate sponge roll, filled with a white chocolate mousse made with chambord liquer, covered with a dark chocolate chambord flavored ganache. YUM
Oh wow, that sounds awesome. If you bring something with booze, why don't you just bring the Chambord and a box of ring dings?
Gin..your cake sounds awesome ! I live closeby to you..do you need a taste-tester??
Of course, chambord and ring dings sound pretty darn good too..
Cindy
looks like I'm gonna have to head to the godiva website!
I second the chambord/ring dings suggestion!

I'm so glad someone started this thread. My name is Penny and I am new to New Jersey (Howell, just east of Jackson and Six Flags). I'm a stay at home mom to 3 girls (5, 4 and 2 1/2). I've always loved baking but it wasn't until last year that I really got into cake decorating. Last fall I finally got to take the Wilton courses. I have so much to learn but, I am loving it!!!!
Hi Penny,
My name is Tricia and I live in Jackson and have three boys (7, 3 and 10 mo) how nice to see someone so close! I have been decorating for a while but not much more than character cakes. I am trying to move into fondant and sugarpaste but I do this more as a hobby than a living. I have 22 nieces on my DH side so I try and do a cake in lieu of a gift!
Hi Ginny. This is Kim from West Orange. I met you yesterday at Sweet n' Fancy. What a great place and you are a wealth of knowledge.
I took Wilton cake decorating classes last year at AC Moore and have been hooked ever since. I began my own business and have a website: www.kimmyskakes.com.
Anyone else from the Essex County area???
Hey girls, is Lower Bucks county/NE Philly close enough? We're neighbors, huh! I noticed you all talking about some cake classes and such...I'm dying to take an advanced cake course, I really really wanna be like the pros (like Colette, etc) and there doesn't seem to be very much for decorators in this area.
Any cake shows around? I went to the one in York, PA last year and probably will this year...but it would be fun to attend a larger one.
And yes I get my DH at Walmart too....and my sugar and Crisco and other stuff at Sam's as well.
im also from jersey...southern jersey in the sticks of tabernacle. i also went to ACC and have a pastry and baking certificate, this is what i love and i get to do it everyday! and surprisingly enough, in 'pastry' school they dont teach you much about decorating cakes! i had to learn it on my own. im 21, and probably one of the youngest on this site!
Another born and bred Jersey girl here. I live in Maple Shade, NJ. I have been decorating for awhile now but still have alot to learn. I have 3 kids 29, 27, and 9. I also have 3 grandchildren 6 , 5, & 4 1/2. They do keep me busy and love me to make cakes and brownies. 3 of them are being cristened tomorrow so I had to make 2 cross cakes and 2 dozen chocolate cupcakes along with the brownies and rice krispie treats. They do get underfoot while I bake but they all do make life interesting.

Welcome Kitagrl !!! There is going to be a show in Atlantic City in October.. I think it was Cindy who posted the link on this thread. I would love to attend that show!

Oooh, I definitely want to go to the show in AC also. We should get a bunch of people together and meet there!
Yeah the show looks awesome! We have a pretty hairy schedule around here so not sure if I can get away (I also have three little guys, ages 6, 4, and 15 mos), but I did look up the site and emailed for more information about the wedding cake challenge as well. I think it would be sooo exciting! I would love the opportunity to really have to think up a cool cake design... I mostly end up with kids cake orders although I have two weddings in September for a change. But I'd love to get some cake show experience. I won a trophy at the show in York, PA last year, but I was bummed because I was the only one in my category, so I don't know how I did in comparison to others with my same skill level.
I'm definately going to keep my eye on that show and see how things work out...
Nancy.. Hi.. I have family that lives in Runnemede, so I kind of know your neck of the woods. I am glad to see more NJ folks finding our thread.
Hey congrats Kitagrl on your trophy! That's a nice ego boost no matter how many people were in the competition.
The AC cake show says it is not open to the public though
I guess if you are in the business you could still go and meet, but for the rest of us home bakers ... keep looking.
I would love to go to a cake show too!
Hello Jersey Girls!!!! My name is Michele, I am 27 and I live in Eatontown. I haven't been decorating very long, but I have always had the knack.. I took some classes at the Monmouth County Vocational school. They offer 2 different decorating classes. I hope to soon take the Wilton Classes at AC Moore. AND in 19 days... I am on my way to VEGAS for Cake Camp. I can't wait!!! (Got my dad to pay for it LOL)
This is cool that we are meeting others from our area!!!
Just wanted to pass on some info regarding the "Baking expo" in atlantic city in october. I went to the website and went through the registration application. It only asks for a business name... no requests for a tax ID# or anything like that. I am going to decide about going in the next week or so and send in my registration. If I hit a snag I will post it here. I have always used "Ginny's Goodies" as my "business name" so thats what I used on the form. Give yourself a name!! Print up some cards on the puter!!.. There you go! you're a business!
P.S. I actually have attended a food show at the Javits center in new york registering with my GG name and they never asked for any additional ID other than my admission ticket.
I am going to a class at the Flourpot workshop in Ambler, Pa. I hope it is worth it. I am sure it will be; their cookies are adorable. I will let you know how it goes.
Hey, DanielleMakesCakes, my husband grew up in tabernacle too. He is way way older than you, he is a whopping 38!
Hi,
I'm from NJ. I just moved there about 2.5 years ago, i live in South Brunswick. I took a wilton class at Michaels just last year. and have been doing cakes for family only at no charge. way to go huh?! If you knew how BIG my family is you'd say i'm crazy. every month there is a birthday, not counting adults. I enjoy decorating, i wish i had more time to practice and take more classes somewhere else. I have 3 kids, single mom and work in NYC. not fun at all. I also decorate cookies here and there, i was able to take Toba's cookie classes in NYC. Stores near me for cake decorating: michaels, acmoore, nycake and candyland crafts in sommerville. all 30 hr or less away from where i live and work. I can't wait til my kids are a bit bigger so i can decorate more often and learn more.
If anyone is interested in business cards and you don't want to go thru the hassle of printing them yourself, check out vistaprint.com for free cards (w/a small shipping and handling charge).

That's good to know. Thanks for sharing. Maybe someday.
Is anyone familiar with home kitchen license requirements in NJ? Is it thru the Dept. of Agriculture or the Board of Health? Which website can I look at to get this info?

I believe it's the Dept. of Health. I requested info regarding licensing requirements from the Dept. of Agriculture over a week ago with no response so far. But, I read in another thread that it is actually through the Dept. of Health. If you find anything, please share. My understanding is that it is not an easy process in NJ - separate kitchen, with separate entrance ....I would be very happy to find out I was wrong!
I'm not ready to start my own business yet (need lots more practice), but was curious about the future possibility.

Hi, My name is Robyn, I am 28. I live in Bridgewater NJ - which is super close to Candy Land Crafts
I have taken all 3 courses of wilton cake decorating at Michaels and found my niche. I have always loved baking, and so now I am trying to start a side-business out of my home. I have only had 2 clients and misc. cakes for my family. Does anyone have info on joining, international cake something.....my instructor was going to give me the full name and how to join, however she was really flakey and never got back to me.
Hey all you NJ buddies,
I use to live in Edison...about 5 mins. from Menlo Mall. I moved back home to VA in '95.
I really miss NJ
NEW JERSEY ROCKS
Wow, it is nice to hear someone missing NJ for once!
I have started researching how to start a home-based baking business, not that I am doing this in the near future, but very curious as to what it entails. Am starting with the county Bd of Health to see what they say. Will let you all know what I find.

Kelleym started a thread called "States that License Home Bakeries" it is under the "Cake Decorating Business" section, she as well as other CC members have done research about home bakeries in many states, I believe that it is against the regulations of the NJ Board of Health to "officially" run a bakery out of your home unless it meets certain requirements, such as separate entry, multiple sinks etc., I'm sure this is for sanitary reasons, etc.
I'm sure many people do it, but it pays to be careful and to know your customers, it only takes one disgruntled customer to turn you in, then there are stiff fines and penalties.
Be careful out there!!
Here is the response I received from the Ocean County Board of Health:
"The N.J. State Sanitary Code Chapter XII - Sanitation In retail
Food Establishments - states as per Section 8:24-2.1(b)- Home prepared
foods are prohibited for use in any retail food establishments. Private
residences are prohibited from use as retail food establishments. A
specially designated area of a residence may be used if the area meets
all the requirements of this chapter, is physically separated from
living areas, and is approved by the health authority. "
I am taking that to mean you need to have a seperate building (converted garage, etc) to cook out of. At least we have the Code numbers to refer to.
Will be a very long time before I would/could ever get to that point.

I'm a little late to this thread, but I from South Jersey in Deptford. I have been baking for about a year and half and I am a Wilton Instructor since May and love it.
I have 5year old son and a 2 year old daughter who always wants to help Mommy.(licking the bowl and beater to help clean)
I spoke with the manager (or whatever is title was) in Gloucester Township that it is illegal in NJ to have a food business out of your home. It really isn't fair
It was nice to see all the other NJ cake addicts.
