I am curious to know how may "Garden Staters" are CC members. Sign in and tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Ginny, I live in Bayonne and have been baking/decorating cakes for about 27 years (YIKES! icon_surprised.gif ) I have been working for the last six months at a cake decorating/candy making supply store in Cranford. Its been a lot of fun to be in on new trends and new supplies and I can let my imagination run wild with all the great stuff we sell.

So come on NJ.. join the fun.. I will be looking forward to "meeting" you all!! icon_smile.gifthumbs_up.gif

Hey Ginny! I'm always eager to find out where the Jersey girls are...and where there are supply stores in our state besides Somerville! There ain't squat by me but A.C. Moore and that doesn't really count!

My name is Bernadette, I live in Warren County near the PA Pocono Mountains. I have always loved baking and have wanted to take decorating classes for years. I finally had the chance to go in January and am trying to hone my decorating. It's something I really enjoy and would love to be able to share with others.

I met a fellow CC'er cindww in June at a Colette Peters' workshop and she has become a very good friend and baking cohort!

Hey gals! My name is Cindy and I am a stay at home mom with 3 sons under 7. I'm in Nutley, New Jersey. I had wanted to take cake decorating classes for a long time and finally got the opportunity to take Course 1 and 2 in the fall of '05. I was lucky enough to attend Colette's Cake Sculpture class in June where I got to meet Zamode (yeah, Bern!!)
I'm really enjoying my cake decorating and have been able to sell a few cakes but have realized that I don't want it to take over my life as a business...at least not while my boys are so young!
Ginny, I'd love to know what your store is called so I can take a drive out there..I don't think its too far from me icon_smile.gif

Hey jersey girls! My name is Becky and I live in Berlin (about 45 minutes from Atlantic City). I am just starting to *learning* how to decorate cookies. I am a stay-at-home mom and just want to do something to supplement our income. I don't want to become a millionaire, just make enough to see some more Bonjovi concerts! icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi!
I am a brand new cake decorator, I am currently taking the Wilton 2 class and I am hooked. I live in Union NJ and would love to know where the cake decorating store is in Cranford, please let me know!

I have been searching a long time for a hobby and I have finally found it, because I dream about cake!

I work full time, except in the summer so its been a great time to begin cake decorating. I would like to pursue it as a hobby and side gig, not full time.

Also, I'm addicted to CC, and have learned a lot already!

The cake decorating store in Cranford is called Sweet & Fancy. It is located at 17 North Ave. West.. If you are familiar with Cranford.. it is on the same block as the movie theater. It is off of exit 137 of the parkway.

Hi Everyone,

Another Jersey Girl here. My name is Ellen. I started taking cake decorating classes with some friends at Michaels. I found I had a knack for it and enjoy seeing what I can make. I wanted to learn so I could make some cakes for my Kids. Needless to say, they are now spoiled and think I can make anything out of cake!

I live in Somerset, soon to be moving to a new house in Hillsborough. I am close enough to go to Candyland Crafts in Somerville on my lunch break if I need to. I swear that store has anything you can think of!

Anyway, I had hopes of starting a licensed home bakery, but as you all know, that seems impossible in NJ. So I make some cakes for work folks, and some of my kids' classmates parties. Not enough for my likeing though.

Nice to meet you all!

I know there are a few more Jersey Girls out there! Steffla and MomLittr at least!

I look forward to visiting Sweet n Fancy very soon, so far I have been getting what I need at Michaels and Walmart, but I'm a newbie and still not sure of everything that I need.

Does everyone here use box cake mixes? If so what are your preferences for brands and flavors?

Hi guys! I'm from South Jersey, Atlantic City area. Not too far from Becky. I went to the Culinary Institute at Atlantic County Community College and completed the pastry program but I really enjoy cake decorating (puff pastry from scratch? Nah, just buy it frozen).

I currently sell cakes, at cost, to friends and referrals and average 1 or 2 a month. I'm looking forward to going to the American Bakery Expo in Oct.

Anyone else from South Jersey?

Mary Ann

Mary-ann, KHalstead is from So. Jersey, not sure if she will be joining us here.

vww, I do both but mostly boxed mixes right now as I learn. I like Pillbusy the best, especially the dark chocolate but I also use Duncan Hines.

I scope out the ShopRite circular each week and can let you know when the cake mix is on sale. Does anyone shop at any of the other NJ supermarkets? If so, can you keep us posted on sales?? Usually once or twice a year, ShopRite puts DH on sale for about 49 cents!! I definitely won't miss that one the next time around!

I'm so glad someone started this thread. My name is Penny and I am new to New Jersey (Howell, just east of Jackson and Six Flags). I'm a stay at home mom to 3 girls (5, 4 and 2 1/2). I've always loved baking but it wasn't until last year that I really got into cake decorating. Last fall I finally got to take the Wilton courses. I have so much to learn but, I am loving it!!!!

Penny,
How do you find time to bake w/3 little ones? I am just starting out also, I'm currently in the middle of the Wilton 2 course, although I'm not a stay at home mom I don't work in the summer, I'm not sure how I will bake when I go back to work. I have 2 boys ages 6 and 4 and I am challenged by finding time to bake and giving them the attention that they demand.

It's not always easy, that's for sure. I can usually get icing made and the baking done during the day with the girls but most of my decorating gets done at night after they're in bed. Can make for some late nights as I'm not very fast yet. icon_confused.gificon_lol.gif When I made my daughter's Bratz cake, we were back in CT that week and my father-in-law took the girls for a few hours (with the help of my brother-in-law - he wasn't up to the task alone icon_lol.gif ) Alone time to do cake decorating, now that's unheard of for me!! icon_eek.gif With 3 little kids, alone time doesn't come along very often. icon_wink.gif

Hi, my name is Sandi and I'm also from Berlin! Over the spring I took the three Wilton classes at AC Moore, since I could always bake a good tasting cake and needed to learn to make a presentable one. As you can see by my pics I'm not as experienced as most. However, I do enjoy reading all the great tips here!

Von the A&P, if anyone has any of those nearby, usually has some good sales every now and then, I get my mixes on sale there.

If you have a Wal Mart nearby you can get DH and BC cake mixes there for under $1 a box. You can also get their brand of confectioners sugar cheaper than in the supermarket. Sam's club is also great for getting milk, eggs, heavy cream, bananas, fresh strawberries, flour (big bags) brown sugar etc. at good prices. I get heavy cream for less than $2 a QUART!

Actually we are going to Wildwood... lol... We plan a trip every year to a different place.. 5 or 6 of us. We had such a good time last year just hanging out in the condo room we rented drinking sangria and dancing and laughing. Almost didnt get to dinner cause no one was sober enough to drive.
