my friend and I are seriously comptimplating opening a home based business. She doing photography and Me doing cakes! What are some things you might suggest that we could use to begin. Simple ideas. Like getting your name out there. Organizing your business. What do you all do?

After reading other posts on similar subjects, I know that some ideas have been to maybe donate cakes to different organization/charity events. Take them to work, or give them to your family members to take to work so that others see what you have to offer. Also getting a table at a farmer's market might be good, you can sell simpler cakes and have pictures of your more elaborate cakes on hand. Also, if you have kids, send cakes to school for different events. These are just a few ideas and I hope they help.

Good Luck!

I've just started my business, and so far I've had the most results with a parent's group that I belong to, (it's just a bunch of other mom's who sit & have coffee together while our kids play!), but I posted an 'ad' on a group website that we all belong to and my business has definitely increased. I also use my cell phone as my contact number, not my home phone. I always hate it when you call a home-based business and their kids pick up the phone with music blaring in the background, it just seems less professional. So if my 3-year-old IS yelling in the background when my cell rings, I don't pick up and the customer can leave a message on my voicemail, (which has my business name on it). I've also done some corporate events for a discounted price, just to get a little cheap publicity.
