I put a crumb coat on my cake and now that I am trying to ice my cake it is pulling the crumb coat off, thus causing me huge problems!

What can I do to fix this? I am using a non-dairy whipped cream icing, that i bought from the Sam's / Wal-Mart bakery.

It sounds like maybe your icing is too thick? If you can, try thinning it out a little bit with some water (I would say milk or cream but I am guessing you got non-dairy icing for a reason) just don't go overboard- add only a drop or two at a time. Good luck!!

Is that a very light fluffy icing? If so, did you put the cake in the fridge to set after you crumb coated? That may help if the icing is like whipped cream. What you can do after the crumb coat is set, put your icing in a bag with a tip #18 and going top to bottom to top, make continuous up and down lines all around the sides of the cake. Then do the continous lines across the top of the cake. This will give you a pretty thick covering of icing to work with. Then carefully smooth with an angled spatula around the sides and then do the top last. Does that make sense? This is the method from Toba Garrett's book and it really works great!!!

You can also use the icer tip if you have that.

That is just what they sell - a non-dairy whipped cream.

Thanks! I'll try that.

Thanks Cindy. I will see if that works too.

It's very thick, it doesn't even form a peak if you put the spatula in it.

I have never used that before. Did you get it from the bakery at Walmart? It does sound like it needs to be thinned down some.

It took quite a bit of water, but it finally worked. Now I wish I could have done it with the crumb coat, too. I was doing too different colors and wanted to blend them, but it still looks pretty good.

Good- I'm glad you were able to get it to work out icon_smile.gif . That's just one more reason I always make my cakes and icings from scratch! Don't forget to post a picture of the finished cake icon_biggrin.gif
