i have my first order cake!!!!!!!!! icon_biggrin.gif i have never had any classes and just started out doing it for family functions and for friends, but i made a cake for my best friend to take for a coworkers bday(using ideas from this site of course!) and now she has 2 coworkers who want to order cakes-1 by saturday and one by fri of next week. my question is.... what are the deminsions of a 1/4 and 1/2 sheet cake. i dont have very many pans, and i have a 9x13 and didnt know how many that would serve. i am very nervous about this and how much should i charge for a 9x13? help!!!!!!!!!! icon_redface.gificon_surprised.gif

A 9x13 is a quarter sheet, and should serve about 25-27 or so. Most bakeries around here charge around$15-17 for one that has flowers or balloons and the birthday girl's name. I think you should go for it, everyone has a first time at everything they do. Good luck, and post pictures!

thanks so much im really needing the encouragement. i am so nervous, like what if it looks bad or tastes bad? all the things that could go wrong keep popping in my head(ive read all of the worst cake stories, lol).. but thanks again, i am glad i can tell her now how many that will serve, if i do end up getting more orders, what are the basic pans and supplies(like which tips are best) will i need to start out? I am only able to do this because of the help, support and idas from this site! thanks so much everyone!!!! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

I'd start out with a few sizes of round 2 in deep pans, like 6, 9, and 10 or 12 inches in diameter. Also a 9x13 rectangle. I started with a Wilton starter set for my tips. They have a good assortment in there. If you've never had a decorating class, I'd recommend finding a good basic class to take , like the Wilton 1 class at Michaels. You will find how to use those basic tips. You can teach yourself, but it's much easier if you have someone to show you. I could never do a rose until I took a class. Of course, they still aren't the best roses out there, but they are much better now.

As far as getting in over your head, just keep in mind how long it takes to bake and frost a cake, then add at least twice that long to decorate it, if it's going to be at all detailed. If you are just getting started, don't take on more than one job a week. That way you can find out what type of time frame works best for you, how fast a decorator you are, and go from there. I'm sure someone more experienced on this board can offer more advice, as well. I'm still sort of a newbie at this....

If you've done cakes before you should be fine. I took all 3 of Wilton's classes and loved them! I have cake sizes and prices on my web site if you'd like to take a look. It might help you set your prices. That was the hardest part for me is figuring out how much to charge and that's always the first thing people ask me.
