Will Chocolate Shavings Stick To Buttercream Icing?

I'm trying to make a white, multi-tiered cake for someone who wants it to be covered in white chocolate shavings (including the sides). The only icing I have experience with is the Wilton crusting buttercream. Will the shavings adhere to this type of icing or do I need to use something different. What would you suggest?

They'll definitely stick-- you just need to do it BEFORE it crusts. It sounds, though, like you might be doing a lot of sticking and it might be crusted over by the time you get one part done. In that case I suggest a buttercream that crusts more slowly or not at all. I use a half butter/half shortening mixture (1/2 cup of each), add a few tablespoons of water (I do this by feel, but maybe 3 or 4?) and a tsp. of vanilla and just mix in enough powdered sugar until it tastes and looks right--- this buttercream crusts, but it takes a very long time. If I want it to crust more quickly I just add more shortening than butter and play with the ratio a bit. You might have to try things out and just see what works for you. icon_smile.gif

And all my sympathy for you from the start--- I love covering my cakes in chocolate shavings, but it can be sooo tedious and time-consuming! icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks SugarAches! I was thinking I would probably need an icing recipe that doesn't crust. Also, thanks for your kind comment on my lingerie shower cake. I just read it.
