I dont know what went wrong, for some reason the support system (dowels) didn't work...as soon as i put the top layer on this cake, it colasped! I redid the entire cake, and am now going to have a sleepless night worrying about it till the customer picks it up!

The top tier was a yellow cake with oreo filling and the bottom is a vanilla cake wiht buttercream...could the top be too heavy for the bottom?
(cake type that is)

ohh, that's so sad! at least it happened with enough time for another cake to be made. if you doweled, i don't see why this would have happened... is this bottom cake tilted? i mean, is the second cake sitting directly on this one horizontally? the only thing i can think of is that structurally, if this bottom cake's top is at an angle, the top cake may infact be too heavy in some parts, such as the lower part of where they connect.

From the picture there looks like there was alot of filling in the cake. That may have been a reason for it? Not real sure, sometimes I wish I was a physics major.

I have no idea what happened as I have not made one yet. Did you use the lesson here to put it together? It should be very sturdy if you do.

How sad this happened. It looks like a lot of hard work went into that cake.

That is just terrible, that looked like a really cool cake, and I'm so sorry that happened to you!

You used dowels, so the weight of the top cake shouldn't have mattered - sounds like a normal cake to me. I have not attempted one of these yet, but I read Collette Peters latest book & she made a clear note that the support system should be straight up & down, and NOT at the angle of the cake - so hopefully you did that correctly - and hopefully you have enough dowel support? I can't think of anything else, unless the cake just didn't have enough time to cool & firm before you started to work with it?

I know someone will be able to help you, and I hope everything turns-out okay tomorrow!

I use the method that is here, where you cut a level part into the cake and put the other cake in that little cutting. I think it probably was the filling..the humidity and heat have been terrible today and I wonder if the filing simply melted!

The other cake so far is surviving...so hopefully it will make it till tomorrow!

My DH is having fun eating the broken cake..he said its delicious! (I had to do four cakes today, so I am sick of cake!!)

I am so paranoid, I always do my cakes a day ahead of time just incase I need to pull an all nighter to fix it.

OH NO! That cake looked really cool!
At least you were able to make another.

My husband normally doesn't like cake unless there is ice cream to go with it, but for the last 4 weeks he has been the one to eat most of my cakes. icon_lol.gif I bet he's just itching for my first disaster. icon_rolleyes.gif

Your second cake looks awesome! I know you were sick when the first one collapsed. I was going to try one this weekend for my grandson's birthday, so I guess I better make extra cake for back up.
