Ok, here's what happened...I was asked to do a baby shower cake for an office baby shower held for a co-worker. Of course, I waited until the night before to bake and decorate, so it would be as fresh as possible- I have a very full time job durring the day, so evening is my only time to bake! It had to be fresh as possible- I work with these people everyday...I was doing a super-full sheet cake - 4- 12x18's together to make a huge 24x36" cake! 1/2 chocolate, 1/2 yellow cake. I had 3 of the cakes baked, when BANG! a huge clap of thunder, and the power WENT OUT! By this time it's around 11:30pm the night before it's due. I had no cake mixes left, and I live in the boonies, where all grocery stores close at 8:00pm! I stayed up until the power came back on, (3:00am) and ran down to the convienence store, 30 minutes away, to buy cake mixes! ($$$) I finally finished the cake, which was adorned with 400 little candy mold ducks from candymelts! It came out fine, just in time to be delivered by 11:00am! Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I had my oven die on me in the middle of a large cookie order, wedding cake and grooms cake. My solution was a little easier. My sister lives 2 miles from me so I just carried my ingredients, tools, pans and cutters to her house. This was actually a blessing because she has double ovens and I was able to bake in half the time. The only drag was carting the baked stuff home to decorate. That took three trips.

WOW! I'm so glad you were able to get everything to work out in the end. Bet you were exhausted at work the next day though! I'm praying this doesn't ever happen to me..... I bake in my mother's kitchen already b/c I keep all of my cake stuff there - and I already think it's a pain to have to go up and down the stairs to the basement all the time (b/c that's wehre all my cake stuff is). - I would have hated to cart it over to someone else's house too......... good thing it worked out in the end for both of you!

I'd love to see a pic. of your cake - it sounds so cute!

Same thing happened to me when I was baking a wedding cake for sis's friend. I put the pans in the oven and about 10 min later the electric went out. Because oven is electronic ignition, once it cooled down below set temp it didn't click back on. I ended up with warm cake batter that had to be disposed of. icon_cry.gif I had to rebake the whole thing the next night, along with the decorating, because the electric didn't come back on until wee hour of the morning.

Just one more reason I do not normally do wedding cakes!!! icon_cool.gif

Duh - i was just going to say "you could put the cake batter in the fridge and then bake it the next day" - but if the power is out - that won't help!! icon_lol.gif I guess if only your oven goes out you could do that - but it probably takes more than a day to get your oven fixed too!
