I've only done one color flow project....from wilton class 2....never done it since. It was that silly little white and blue bird.
I am planning on doing color flow Spongebob characters to stand up around a stacked cake - so there are lots of colors to do.....which is making me a little nervous.
Any advice on how to handle a project like this? One character at a time? or, One color at a time on all characters? Outline everything first, then fill in one color at a time? Aaaggghhh.....I really don't know where to start.
help....please.....thanks.
for simplicity...one color at a time across all the characters is how I would do it.
first outline them all.
then pick a color (say yellow) and do all the yellow...only i mixing and all match..
then move on to other colors
oh, and I use the color wheel to my advantage....
thus will do the primaries (red, yellow, blue) first and then use the left overs as start on blended colors (green orange purple) saves on icing.
I sort of thought that would be the best way to do it.
Never thought of the color wheel idea....thanks...
Would anyone care to share the colorflow method....I'm making a cake for my son's b-day next week & would love to do the stand up characters.
I pretty much know how to do it but do you have a recipe for it or do I have to buy it?
Thanks
you make colorflow with a mix that wilton makes. The recipe will be inside of the can. The recipe makes a stiff icing, you will outline your colorflow pics with it. Then you thin it down to where it will flow, and you just flow it in. Easier to show than explain i guess!
the scoop from wilton >> color flow info
from Delores McCann >> her info
if you look in the wilton course cake gallery, the course two cakes w/ the birds or picket fence....the birds and fence are made using color flow.
That's a great link. It's really helping me remeber back to my class...thanks.
I just realized I spelled help wrong...ooopppsss.
You can also use royal icing to make a color flow piece.
Oh and don't forget to make doubles in case one breaks on ya.
Well, I made them all. Seven characters - two of each character. All very detailed characters.
It took me about 5 hours and my hand is killing me. Thanks all for the advice!!! I sure hope these things work .... the cake is for next Sunday so I'm gonna rest my hands for a few days.
SLK: I would love to see a pic of the color flow pieces if possible...I"m goint to attempt them for the first time later this week.
I make a Cinderella color flow plaque that came put pretty good. So if you want an example, you can look here:

One thing I do is to let everything dry before doing another color. That way I don't have any potential problems with color bleeding.
I just looked at your color flow plaque and can't get over how perfect it is. What a great job. I have problems getting the outside lines that straight. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, Pat
OK cakesbyellen...I don't want to show mine now cause your's blows my to pieces. That's perfect!!!!!!
I will post mine later this evening when I get home from work.
ge978 - are you doing spongebob characters or something else?
I can't wait to see yours SLK.
Well, my 2 year old little boy is into Dora, Sesame Street & Jack's Big Music show equally....so I figured I would do a few characters from each & put them all on a cake.
I'll check back later to see if you posted them
OK, here are my Spongebob Characters. I made 2 of each - but in different sizes. I wasn't sure of what size I wanted on the final cake..so even if one broke I thought it would be ok to mix and match.
I outlined with black, filled in with color, then outlined with black again. The second step of outlining really helped clean up any spillover, blending colors - or my three year olds smudge marks when I wasn't looking....lol. The biggest problem I had was by the end, my hand was really sore and tired, so my lines got a little squiggly.
It took about about 20 different parchment bags. I'm only about 75% happy with them...but, lots of practice is good. This was my first time doing it for real (not the silly little blue bird.) As you can see, little Squidward's head and big Spongebob's leg did not make it....may they rest in peace. I think I can fix them both.
I'll make sure to post the cake next week when it's all together.
Thanks again for everyone's help.
Good luck with your cakege978. I love multi themed cakes, I did my 3 year olds with Spongebob, Dora and Strawberry Shortcake (in my pics), it was so much fun to do!!!
Wow!! They really came out great, congrats!!
I was thinking of one thing, i haven't done many colorflow projects before, but they have always been laid flat on a cake, so you cannot see the mess behind. I was searching through the web last night and came across a great idea for a simpsons cake, but i wanted to do the pieces standing up, what do i do to make the back of the piece look neater?
Any help with be much appreciated, thanks
Thanks guys. I am planning on standing my characters up right on the cake too, but I thought I would lean them against the sides of the cake. I did read in one of the above links that if want both sides to look neat, then wait for 48 hours after doing one side, flip over and do the back side too. I think it would make it more durable too - stronger.
However, I decided NOT to do this because I was scared I would not be able to match the colors from one side to the next - I didn't make enough icing in the first place. If you make double the amount of color flow that you need at one time then store them well, you could do both sides. I had like 20 colors...to much to keep track of - for me.
thanks ge978 - can't wait to see yours...
btw, I love your avitar and the "shut your cakehole" line....i'm laughing...

hahah thanks!
I have one more question.... can I use the americolors for this? It says to use the paste, but all I have are the americolors...will it thin the icing too much. anyone know?
I used americolor on mine.
Just be careful. They are powerful colors!!!!! I even started using a toothpick to get just a dab of the color because a drop was to much ...
Thanks SLK...hahah yep, i know all about the americolors...I was so used to using wilton that the first time I used the americolor, I used way too much! I really appreciate your help on this....I'll post the pieces when I'm done with them
I'm done! The cake turned out really good (at least I thought it did.) Everyone at the party seemed to really enjoy it...from decorations to flavors. The Party girl wanted to keep it for herself and not share....living up to the 5 year old reputation.
I glued toothpics to the bottom of each character with royal icing, then they stood in the cake perfectly.
I really had a lot of fun with this cake. Thanks a lot again for all that helped in the steps of this project.
Wow, it came out awesome!!! I can definitely understand why the birthday girl didn't want to share, i wouldn't of either..lol! Great job!
