boss' birthday, german chocolate cake?

Does anyone have any decorating ideas? It's the 50th birthday of the president of my company and his assistant just asked if I could do his birthday cake. His favorite is german chocolate. Does anyone have any decorating ideas with the coconut frosting and chocolate? Pictures would be great.

What you can do is frost the cake in chocolate frosting and then just put the German icing on the top of the cake make a chocolate border around the cake and or maybe some large puff dots.... and maybe some chocolate shavings on top..

I decorate a German chocolate cake like any other cake. As Ladycake suggested, ice your cake as usual using the pecan/coconut icing and use the fudge icing or chocolate icing to do your decorating. This is widely excepted in the industry. For some basic ideas, just go to your grocery store bakery and look at their German chocolate cakes. They are all iced this. You can go further by using better borders and such, but you can get a good start looking at theirs.

I have also placed a chocolate transfer on a German chocolate cake. That is always an option for you.

But truly, you can decorate a German chocolate just like any other.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I recently finished Wilton's course I & II and took all my class cakes into the office for people there to eat, plus I've done birthday cakes for co-workers before. However, this is the first offer I've gotten for someone to pay me for a cake, so I'm kind of excited!

Do you happen to know of any really great fudge recipes? I've looked online at a few I can try, but nothing is really standing out. I'm looking for something that will come out a darker, ricker chocolate color.

I am icing the cake as usual and doing a basket weave for my BIL-to-be's groom's cake.

I just uploaded a picture of my German Chocolate Cake, you can see it on the home page of this website! This type of cake really doesn't need decorating, per say. If you are interested in the recipe, just post a reply. I have one made from scratch and one recipe made from a box..both are equally delicious! Happy baking, Missey
