I was happy with the way my first sheet cake came out. I had a hard time trying to find some for inspiration, but apparently I wasn't searching right. I love all the cakes I've seen on here. Thanks for posting this.

oh I forgot about this one I did too. I guess this qualifies as a sheet cake?

I was browsing the galleries and came across this one. I don't think anyone else has posted it on this thread.

I am so happy for all of the inspiration for sheet cakes! I must convert my way of thinking, and I think this thread just might have done the trick!
I realized that I have done several sheet cakes, but I sometimes don't take pictures, because they are "just" sheet cakes! Here are some of my own favorites:

And the last one was the beginning of my serious cake decorating:

Now, can anyone tell me why I get Error 404 for so many of the pictures?
Thanks!!!

ok - I guess I'm brain dead and can't correctly post a link anymore! Here's a picture of a cake that was done by mykidsarekillingme:
AJsGirl, none of those links worked for me. I got an error 404 message. Is it me or is it a CC error?
I don't know, I noticed that after I posted. I am getting the same error when I click on other people's links, too, so I don't know.
They're in my pics, though.
i can get any of my picture to post so here are links to the same cakes on my site
Most of my cakes are sheet cakes so i am alwaystrying to jazz them us a bit!

I agree that the standard sheet cake from the store can be boring at times. But then again there are some great decorators that work in those places but are required to stick to the "cost effective" way of doing things. This topic really shows that if someone has great talent and a great mind they can make anything look good, no matter if its a 9X13 rectangle or some 7 cake stacked monstrocity with gallons of icing, fields of gumpaste flowers, pounds of luster dust, and millions of fondant figures!

PS all these cakes posted are great!!!
Boy I'm not a fan of sheet cakes at all, but I must confess there are some beautiful cakes displayed in this thread!

This is such a fun thread!! I almost always do sheet cakes, at least until I found CC a couple of weeks ago (or is it months... time flies on this site that's for sure ). Now I can't wait to try out all the great ideas of stacked cakes I get from here.
Anyway, here are two sheet cakes that I have made

This was my first "real' sheetcake. It was so much fun to make and I was just thrilled that it was a hit! (Yes, it's a typical OTH cake, oh well!!! )
With CC being down intermittent, I went thru this whole thread. It's a great fun thread, thanks for posting! I love all the pictures.
Here's one I made that is my favorite sheet.

I added some new sheet cake idea in my album tonight.
Kakeladi that cake you made is very cute indeed! I took a peak at it. I think that the sheet cakes are becoming my favorite. It's like having a big piece of construction paper to design and fill up!
heh heh, ART was my favorite subject in school. Especially acrylics, pastels, and oil painting! Now, ceramics was another matter!
I REALLY like your beach theme sheet cake! Wow, it makes me wish I was sitting on a lounge chair on the sand!
I absolutely LOVE this Wizard of Oz cake by Sugarshack!!!!

Here are a couple of mine. I can't say that I like doing sheet cakes. Mainly b/c I draw a blank w/ such a large blank canvas & icing those things gives me heartburn thinking about it. I'm not great (I actually hate how it never turns out like I want) but trying to improve with time & practice

I don't mind doing sheet cakes. I guess I kind of look at them as a blank sheet of paper that I can put anything on. Here are a couple of favorites that I have done.

This is such a great thread. I'm not one who enjoys doing sheet cakes. I know tons of people look at them as an empty canvas. Me, I look at it as now what? Its been so much fun going back and looking at all these sheet cakes. I only have 1 that is a favorite of mine. I make several at graduation time.
Not that any more posts on this are needed, but here's my two-cants worth, anyway. Of necessity, I always use a very large sheet cake(about 24" by 18" or so - it holds five of my standard cake recipes) as the base for my granddaughter's birthday cakes, because birthday parties here in Mexico tend to be well-attended affairs, especially outside of the largest cities (my granddaughter lives in Cancún). I think of this base cake as my canvas. I've often used it alone and decorated it with FCBT images - Tigger, Garfield and all the Madagascar characters. Last year, it was the characters from a cartoon from Yucatán called "La Gruta del Alux". Other times, I've used the sheet cake as a base and put other, smaller cakes on top. This child and her mother have birthdays on consecutive days, so one year I put a doll cake dressed as a queen on top, as well as a pillow cake with with the figurine of a 3-year-old on it. The words were to the effect that "The queen and her princess are having a birthday...", only in Spanish (La reina y su princesita cumplen años...). This year, I'm learning to use fondant and gumpaste, so I'm planning on a beach scene to end all beach scenes. I'll either send in a photo or direct you to the pertinent blog on Cake Wrecks.
It depends on my mood if I like sheetcakes or not...sometimes they turn out cute and other times, my mind goes blank. It's a great way to show off a frozen buttercream transfer or your ability to make pretty flowers...but sometimes you can doll them up to look as fancy as any other cake. Afterall, they're just a rectangle instead of a circle, square, etc. You can also add to them to make them 3D like any other cake (like my noah's arc cake)
Here are a few of my sheet cakes that I thought turned out nice:
