Has anyone ever made homemade piping gel and have good luck with it? Here is the recipe I found. I just put mine in the refrigerator but it seems awful thin right now. I am wanting to try a piping gel transfer. I figured since I already had the ingredients on hand this would be cheaper than buy a tub of piping gel. I am not close to a Michael's or Hobby Lobby either.

2 envelopes or 2 T of Knox Gelatin
2 T cold water
2 C light Karo Syrup

Sprinkle gelatin over cold water in a saucepan and let it sit for 5 minutes. Heat on low until gelatin has become clear/dissolved. Do not boil.

2. Add the syrup and heat thoroughly.

3. Cool and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.

To color: add gel or food coloring to piping gel.

To use: put in an icing bag with a small tip or a plastic squeeze bottle.

Since you got it from Baking 911, I would post in the forum for Sarah or Squirrelly to reply. I have a recipe for it but haven't tried it yet.

I tried this recipe once, mine was thin too. So I thought I'd thicken it up by adding another envelope of gelatin disolved in water. After it got cold, it was like rubber. Would have made great gummy bears. Maybe it will thicken up after its chilled. Just thought I'd let you know what NOT to try!

i think you can try reducing the corn syrup to just 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cups... the original recipe will result in piping gel that looks like this:





...which is ok for stained glass or covering large patches but not ideal for fine piping or writing. the gel set up a bit more as it cooled down but i think if you reduce the amount of corn syrup you should end up with something more stable for piping letters
