Need A Quick Answer To A Really Dumb Question.....
Baking By Sugar_Plum_Fairy Updated 9 Jun 2007 , 9:10pm by Sugar_Plum_Fairy
I'm preparing to make Earlene Moore's Kaluaha Fudge Cake. The first "ingredient" is DH Devil's Food Cake. Do I follow the directions on the box and then add the rest of the ingredients, or do I use the mix and just the other indredients she lists?
Please help. I think my brain is becoming addled.
I would use just the mix as an ingredient, but since I'm not familiar with the recipe, it's hard to know for sure. Usually it will specify 'prepared' if you are suppose to add ingredients to it. Does the recipe sound like it will be right with just the mix, for instance, the right amount of eggs, oil, etc for a cake recipe?
Here's the recipe from Earlene's website:
Kaluaha Fudge Cake - small recipe
1 Devils Food Cake Mix (Duncan Hines is my preference)
1/4 C. Flour
Add 2/3 C. Whole Eggs Approx. 3 eggs
2/3 lb. Sour Cream
1/2 C. Wesson Oil
1 t. butavan
Mix Thoroughly
Add 1/4 Cup of Kaluaha minus 1 T.
Stir in by hand 2/3 C. Chocolate Chips
Fill pans 1/2 full and bake at 325 degrees for approx. 1 hr. to 1 hr. 20 min.

Sugar-Plum, make the cake as the recipe shows. Do not follow directions on the DH box, use only the mix. I make this cake and it is excellent! Get ready to fall in love with another delish chocolate cake!
I jumped over to earlene's website to read the recipe: use it dry, straight from the box and add the ingredients as directed.
I could be wrong but it sounds like just the cake mix and her listed ingredients. It says small cake and there are plenty of eggs and liquid. Good luck! Let us know how it turns out.
Thanks all. When I first made it I thought it was too thick, but I put it in my prepared pans and realized it's probably just because it's suppose to be dense. So I'm sticking them (a round 9" and a 9x5 loaf pan) in the oven. I'm making Earlene's baseball glove.
Wish me luck! It's for tomorrow and I obviously didn't give myself much time.

It's a flavoring....I think it's like butter and vanilla or something like that...You can read about it on Sugarcraft's website.
You can order it on http://earlenescakes.com/recipes.htm
Here is what it actually is:
Butavan is a thick (pudding like consistency) very strong butter/vanilla emulsion flavoring that I use in nearly all my recipes. It looks and smells like butterscotch. It is now available for shipping. Order here

Butter/Vanilla emulsion. Makes everything you make smell and taste good!
Well, they're done. They look great and I took a little taste (cut off a tiny sliver from the loaf), they taste really good too. Thanks all. As soon as they finish cooling, and then some, I'll torte and fill.
Can hardly wait until tomorrow.
Hi.
I use Earlenes recipe all the time... its one of my most requested.. you do not prepare it as the box says.... just straight mix.
Enjoy.. I also use DH Triple Choc Fudge in place of one Devils food and it makes an awesome flaovr... expecially with a little cinnamon!! YUM
Thanks so much, pinkbox. I'll have to remember that (using the other flavor) in the future.
