Hi Guys,

Just wondering whether anyone has used/bought the wilton cake leveler and what their comments on the same are as I am thinking of buying one.
Thanks

Anna

I have the small one and love it! I am going to buy the large one as soon as I can. I think it is a great tool at a low price; it works great in my opinion. Cakes come out level every time. Much more trustworthy than "eyeballing" icon_confused.gif it and doing it with a knife!

I have both the small and the large. I used the large one twice; on the second occassion I literally threw it out the back door, swearing until I ran out of cuss words. It bends and totally wrecks cakes! I HATE it! The small one is marginally good on small, frozen cakes. Save your money! I hate 'em, just hate 'em, I tell you.

Thanks Guys for your feed back. I bought the Wilton Icing sculpture and that was a complete waste of money, didn't want the same think to happen again.

I'm glad to see there is someone else who doesn't like these. I think because I use a dense cake recipe it was hard to saw through the cake. Maybe it works well for lighter cakes, ie, sponge and angel cakes.

I have the large leveler and there are MANY TIMES I want to just chuck the stupid thing out the window and drive over it with my car! So... when I use it I am extra careful, you have to watch that the blade isn't bending and eating up the cake! When it doesn't bend it works good, but you have to pay close attention. For the price I would buy it. Someone posted something about an AGBAY one, very very pricey, someday when I am independently wealthy I'll buy one!!!! For now, I'll stick with the wilton, it is better than free handing it with a knife.

How interesting! I have had success with mine every single time. Honest! LOL!! I don't consider it a waste at all. Each to his own, I suppose! icon_smile.gif Glad it works for me at least! LOL!

I bought the large one off Ebay - used it a couple of times then onsold it - USELESS!

It bends and I can do better by eyeballing it icon_smile.gif imo

Sounds like it's a love or hate relationship so far.

I've got the small and large one (got them for Christmas from my husband.) I cannot level a cake to save my live...so for me, they come in handy.

I've had best luck when I cut cakes after they have cooled - but before I freeze or refrigerate them. I've heard others say they cut cakes frozen - but this has never worked for me. The blades just don't seem to be able to cut through frozen dense cakes.

On the small one (I use this one the most) I am still having problmes getting the wire even on both sides. It seems like there is an extra little knotch on one side that messes me up.

For me - they are worth it.

I have one and can't figure it out. I think it needs roller skates or something. icon_lol.gif

Seriously, I cannot ever get it to slide, so I just eyeball it too. icon_cry.gif

SLK - I just count the notches from the bottom and make sure it is the same number on both sides (from the bottom). I sure like mine. I also level mine after they have cooled but not frozen. I have used it to just barely take the raised "hood" off as well as to torte. So......not sure why the others have had such bad luck! One comment...I watched a lady who has decorated for years try to use mine...she tried to PUSH the wire into the cake rather than a sawing back and forth motion...she got just as frustrated. She "didn't care for it" either, but when I showed her how it reall works, she was impressed and now likes it. Just a thought...

Okay, it looks like there are definitely differences of opinion here.

I have had both. I don't like the small one, that little wire never really worked for me, and it was too small for big cakes.

Now I love the big one. In fact, I do believe I lost mine when I moved, so I am heading out to Michael's for another, I'm lost without it.
