Va. Doesn't Recognize A "home Bakery"

Well, any thoughts that I may have had about the possiblity of ever selling a cake out of my house have now been squashed. I checked with the State Dept. of Agriculture as well as the State Health Dept and they both agree that home bakeries are not recognized in the State of Virginia and if caught doing this, there would be a stiff penalty. In order to sell a cake or any baked goods you have to have a Commerical kitchen which of course comes with a lot of regulations. You would basically have to build a kitchen for this purpose. So, I now know that this can only be a hobby and any cake that I make will be given away. Oh well, I doubt that I will ever be good enough to have been successful at selling my cakes especially without having taken classes but the possibility was always in the back of my mind. Now they have gone and burst my bubble Anyway, I thought that this information may be of interest to anyone living in Va.
You could always rent a commercial kitchen at a community center, or church etc. Just a thought.
I always wonder about this.....I also wonder if you just have to bake out of the kitchen...can you decorate at home? Its really crazy.
these laws can drive you nuts....its all about sanitation.
so... in NC can do it from the home kitchen BUT..one BIG proviso....
NO, NO, NO, NO, not even in the YARD
PETS!!!
so, it's cakes or a dog/cat/bird/etc.
(no fun!--tho' considering some of the CATastrophies and DOG hijinks i've read about on here......)
hee, hee, hee. It's amazing how each state is so different in it's requirements. Very interesting..
