Hi I have finished my baby shower cake and used a little lace on, I cooked the chocolate mud cake in a daddies 4in cake tin, it came out great. still trying all the recipes for the lace I even tried the one with the tylose. The recipe worked but it looked see through needs to have colour put in to work on a cake. I will make a wedding cake with black lace using this recipe.

Best Regards

Hi Sweettart,

Thanks for reply, yes I found the recipe on here did not work it came out looking like dried wallpaper paste. Although I am still trying to get my icing to stay flexible. I have icing everywhere my husband says I am an icing nerd.

Too answer your question I used the sugarveil mix but I did it wrong first time and did not leave the mix for 24hrs before remixing then using in the mat. It came out second time but you have to be extra carefull if you have sweaty hands then it will stick to you so dust your hands with cornflour.

I Hope this all helps

Best Regards & Happy Baking

Thanks so much for your reply, I took the recipe that was posted on here and have been playing around a bit with it.  I added an extra tsp of gelatin dissolved in aprox. 1/8th of a cup of warm water and then I also added about a tbsp(guessing measurements because I didn't measure exact :( oops).  So far I made one strip of lace last night with it and it worked really well.  I made another strip and left it in the mold till this morning and it broke as I took it out so I guess I learned if you leave it in the open air too long it goes hard and cracks.  Very much a learning and trial and error experience. :mischeivous:

Thanks again for replying,

Ila

Hi Everyone, Guess what I have done it and it works perfect. I am getting a patent on it because it works so well.

I had a trial cake to make and I was told to go mad on the colour so I did

I have made a lot of lace some I will use next week for a wedding cake I just could not get over how it drapes and does not stick at all to your fingers only to the cake.

I am going to call it Chantilly Lace Icing. I leave it to dry for approx. 4hrs under a ceiling fan, and it comes out great you don't even have to turn over to do this it just comes straight out. very flexible.

I hope you find a recipe for yourself soon.

Best Regards

It would be muchly appreciated! :D

Sorry Chantilly Lace I just read back in a previous post of yours and realized that you are using the sugarveil product so haven't got a recipe to share.

Thanks anyway!

I like Sugar Dress best but find that I need both Sugar Dress and Sugar Veil.  Dress stays rubbery and if it does dry hard it will soon absorb moisture from the room and become rubbery again.  Hence the need for Sugarveil which hardens quickly and stays that way - so if you need a lace to conform to a cake shape, choose Sugar Dress but if you want to make lace bows or anything that needs to stand on its own away from the cake, like lace flower petals, then you need Sugar Veil.  Here's what I made with SugarDress.

The flower petals are made of sugar lace backed with gumpaste petals.

Hi DeniseNH,

I know what you mean, the recipe that I tried on here did go rubbery and I said it looked and felt like wallpaper paste gone dry.

I found that the sugarveil dried after approx. 3 days and then it was to hard to get out of the mat. When you get it to release it sticks to your hands making it difficult to work with.

I have asked my local cake decoration supplier who sells all of the lace mixes and he says that in Australia the sugarveil does take around 3 days to dry enough to get out of the mat.

Best Regards

Hi Pat,

To speed the processing/setting of SugarVeil, here are instructions for the "oven-set" method: http://www.sugarveil.com/mat/SugarVeil-Confectioners-Mats.pdf. And increasing the oven temperature to 170 degrees F/77degrees C allows you to set any of the mats within 20 minutes (as an example, the Lace Mat takes 8.5 minutes to set).

Since it sounds like you are in very humid conditions, here are some helpful notes for working with SugarVeil in humidity: http://www.facebook.com/notes/sugarveil-icing/sugarveil-icing-in-humid-conditions/115755021801759. And a bit of cornstarch on the fingertips is helpful as well.

One other tip: Re-beat SugarVeil Icing every few hours. SugarVeil's color is naturally white, without artificial colorants. If you've mixed but not used it for several hours (on the left of the photo), just rebeat it to restore the natural white-white color on the right.

Thank you for experimenting. Sugarveil, although pretty does not smell yummy, and not the best tasting. Next time I have some time, I may just have to try your little experiment out. :)

Hi Michele Hester,

My recipe looks a bit like meringue  and I do have to rebeat it to get it to work after a few hours.

I have been mixing colours with mine and the only one that I cannot get is gold, I have tried gold powder but it comes out creamy so I have added a bit of silver sparkle to see if this works I have only just tried it. What do you use for gold and how much for 200g.

Best Regards

I've been experimenting and found that what I really want is a combination of both Sugar Veil and Sugar Dress.  So I added a quarter teaspoon of CMC to my Dress  - which seized it up so I had to add more water but when the lace came out of the mold some of the stickiness was gone and it did set up (less floppy) - big technical term :-)  Next experiment - I'll mix both Sugar dress and Veil together to see if that gives me the body I'm looking for while keeping the flexibility for a while so I will have time to make it in advance and apply it successfully to the curvature of a cake or form it into a bow loop.  Will let everyone know the results.

Pat, for coloring SugarVeil gold, mix gold dust with grain alcohol (Everclear) and paint or airbrush onto set SugarVeil decorations. Also, if you are using a Confectioners' Mat, you can paint the gold color onto the mat before spreading with SugarVeil, like we did with our Brooches Mat [the particular technique is shown here in full http://www.facebook.com/SugarVeilicing/photos/a.10152213747879893.1073741858.58910664892/10152213748434893/?type=3&theater]:

When you spread with SugarVeil and peel, it looks like this:

Or you can use silver dust instead:

Hi Everyone, I am now in the process of packing my own recipe for flexible icing. I have just made a 2 tier wedding cake with Chantilly lace icing

on it took half an hour.  I wish I knew about flexible icing 8 yrs ago I stopped making cakes because I had a burst aneurysm in the brain. I am very lucky to be here let alone starting my own business.

I am still not going to pipe much but making flexible icing is easy.

All the Best

Pat

Very interesting read (read the whole thread) :)

I have been researching recipes for making edible lace which brought me here.  The recipe posted by Dawn (I think) is on youtube and I think it is in Spanish; but also translated in English too.  I am about to try it myself and perhaps tweak it somewhat, but I will post my results at some point when my experimenting is complete......

The red flag is for reporting a post to a moderator, maybe that will get their attention to help you with removing it, but having it up twice is really not an issue.  The packaging color is pretty.
