Help!!! This Just Happened To Me..what Went Wrong?????

This first is not my picture....I got it from Wilton..it is hpjmom.

But....this just happened to me 1 min ago......I couldn't fix it either...Thank goodness it was a freebee cake (for my puppy's groomer)
But......I iced the cake last night..no problem...i should of looked today..But didn't until right before she came...

I do not freeze my cakes and I don't use that new 'no trans fat' shortning...HELP!!!! Anyone seen this? How do I prevent this...This is the 3th time it has happened to me. Is it the torting?

And when you touch it...It is a huge Air bubble...It moves!!!! I pop it ...but didn't have time today...

Your cake may have settled and the air is being pushed into that area causing cracking.

What kind of frosting is it? Is it buttercream? I know with fondant when there are air bubbles you can insert a pin in the air bubble (at an angle so the hole doesn't show up when the pin comes out) to fix the problem. I wonder if that would work for this?

I just wanted to add though, that it's hardly noticeable in the picture and it looks like a fun colorful cake!

I always make sure that my frosting is SMOOSHED totally onto the sides of the cake i've noticed in the past if i haven't done this.. sometimes with the big icing tip I guess I don't get it on there as good and it will slip or form a bubble type issue.. it's so ucky Usually I am able to just take a small spatula or a viva paper towel and push it gently back onto the cake. only happens i've noticed when it's real humid here too...
who knows sometimes i think icing and cakes have a whole different set of rules

This isn't my picture....Mine was MUCH WORST!!! and the bubble was huge and came right out from the cake....about an inch.
I use buttercream....I do put a pin in...to drain out the air...But I don't want this to happen again...And I can't believe it has been 3 times..

What did you use as a fillling? Sometimes a filling made with fruit will do that? Sorry, I'm not much help. I usually torte and fill my cakes, crumb coat them, let them sit overnight so they will settle and then frost/decorate the next morning.

NO I didn't get a photo of it...Cause I noticed 2 mins before she walked in the door.

I fill mine with the buttercream...or at least that one was....

I used a tip 1A to fill it....around in circles. Does anyone else do that?
That is what I learned in the Wilton class....The only thing I could think of...is that I didn't spread it out....and maybe there was a air pocket between the icing strips....

I still feel horrible!!! I hope they didn't HATE the cake...

Looks like a setteling problem, make sure the cakes are leveled off so there isn't big gaps around the edges, cause when you have gaps and fill and let it sit and settle there is no where for the frosting to go but out of the sides. Make sure the cake is level crumb coat it let it sit a couple hours then frost it. HTH Don't give up try and try again!!!!!!!!

HATE cake?? icon_eek.gif It seems you did this as a nice gesture to show appreciation for someone that helps you out. I seriously doubt that they will be anything but thrilled with your cake (no matter what it looks like) and enjoy eating every last piece.
What is that saying?? It's the thought that counts? And when you serve it up with cake.......well. We all know that's even better! icon_biggrin.gif

I was reading this post yesterday and I had never had it happen to me before...what a coincidence, it just happend yesterday. So I am interested in any opinions as well.

I read on the forum (sorry can't remember who or when) icon_cry.gif to add some cake crumbs to your frosting for the dam around the filling. I tried that & so far have had great success with it. I do the dam, let sit in the frig for 10 -15 minutes, fill, back in the frig for 10 - 15; put on the top layer, crumbcoat & then in the frig overnight. Let that sit overnight & then can see if there are any problems before frosting/decorating the next day. Sounds like a lot of steps & perhaps those with more experience feel some aren't necessary. However for me at this moment in time I'm content as haven't had one failure since doing things this way. I'm interested to see any further suggestions, though as sure there likely is a much quicker/easier way. Don't fret about your cake.... it is a lovely one that anyone would be honored to receive! thumbs_up.gif

If it was an air bubble, I am wondering if you frosted the cake straight from the refrigerator or freezer? As the air warms up inside the cake, it expands and pushes out and can create air pockets in the frosting.
