Do you deliver cakes or have them picked up by customer?

I'm just wondering... I've been having my customers pick them up, which has worked fine so far. I know with wedding cakes it will be different, since I"ll have to set them up on site, I'm just talking about birthday, shower cakes, etc....

Also, if you do deliver, do you charge extra for delivery?

I always deliver my cakes - no matter the occasion. I don't usually charge an extre fee (I've already built some delivery expense into the cost) unless it is farther than 25 miles from my home

Depends on the cake. Wedding cakes, of course I deliver those. Or if it's a tiered cake of some kind, then I deliever them. As far as sheets go, I usually meet people part way or have them come get them. If I need to go out and I'm going in the direction that person is in, I'll meet them part way... I do it more for convenience... so neither of us have to go the full trip. And I don't charge for delievery, I usually build that into the price of the cake. icon_lol.gif

I give the customer the option. I usually deliver the cakes. Some others like to come and get it.

because now i live out in the boonies of illinois and most of my customers are in chicago... i either deliver it for free or if the cake is wanted on saturday.... i have my mom bring it to her job and they pick it up icon_smile.gif

icon_cool.gif I mostly give my clients the option of pickup or delivery for shower cakes, birthday cakes etc..If they want me to deliver then I tell them it is a $2.00 a mile ONE WAY trip for me due to gas being so outrageous. And they are ok with that. Most of my trips have been under 10 miles too.
For the wedding cake, have to make that journey for the set up. No extra fee I charge.. icon_wink.gificon_wink.gifusaribbon.gif

I deliver wedding cakes or cakes (anniversary, etc.) with more than 3 tiers ... I figure in the miles to where the reception is held into the cost of my cake... birthday cakes, the customer picks up.. If they want me to deliver, I charge them more and that only depends on where they're requesting it to be delivered... if it's too far, I tell them I can't deliver and tell them they must pick it up .. usually they go along with picking it up .. if they need the cake on a weekday that I'm at work, I bring the cake with me to work and they pick it up from me .. it all works out really well icon_smile.gif

Well, you know there is a real plus side to delivering the cakes, you don't have to clean up your huge mess before the customer shows up, haha! Even though I clean as I go along, there is still always a mess and the floor always needs washing and so does everything else. I also absolutely hate it when customers make you wait around for hours before they show up. It seems that a lot of them are also "super busy" and very late. Good thing we cake decorators have nothing better to do than wait around for hours until they show up, haha! Can you tell it was one of "those weeks"!

I am feeling this right now! lol. I just finished my cake for pick-up tomorrow afternoon, and really wishing I said I would deliver it, 'cause now I am frantically trying to get my house spotless before the customer comes to pick it up.

No, seriously, I don't think it would work out for me if I had to deliver all my cake. I've got 3 small kids to pack around, and it would be a big hassle for me to have to deliver all the cakes. I just figured, if they bought a cake from the store, they'd have to come to town to pick it up anyway, so they shouldn't mind picking it up from me.

I used to deliver my cakes (birthday, shower cakes etc.) until my sister told me to stop. She said when you order a cake from a bakery, they don't bring it to you, so why should people expect my cakes to be brought to them, unless of course they pay extra for delivery.

So, what I do now is have the birthday cakes picked up, but we deliver (and charge for it) wedding and tiered cakes.

I personally like to deliver my cakes. It saves me from having to wait around for someone to pick them up plus since a good amount of my cakes are done for people I don't know (word of mouth) I don't want any and everyone knowing where I live.
