I think the family tree cakes are really cute, you could do a lot with it.

Sack for sack races

What does your family do at these?

Going with the family tree idea, make it with cupcakes. Take your cupcakes and form in shape of a tree with trunk. Then decorate. This would be easy to serve also, no one has to cut!

I like the family tree idea as well. There is one in the course 1 wilton book that is kind of cute.

I have a family tree cake in my pics.. It was for a baby shower, but it would still work...Hope that helps!

I've done a few family tree cakes.
This first one was a half sheet cake for a grandfather's birthday, in autumn colors:

Note that the grands are on the trunk, their children are on the big branches, grandchildren are on the small branches.

The next was a half sheet for a family reunion where the patriarch had remarried after his first wife died, so there are two wives and two sets of children:

For the bark, do you just use the basket weaving tip?

This might be a weird question, but for the names on the branches, would you put someone's name on there, even if they are deceased? My family reunion on my mom's side is coming up. I don't know if it would not be appropriate to put the names of my grandpa's brothers and sisters even though some of them have past away.

I think I used either an 18 or 21 tip for the trunk and branches.

About the names, when a person passes away, that does not remove them from the family. Many of the names on my trees were people no longer among the living. Everyone gets included on a family tree, imo.
