She Actually Sat On My Cake!!! (Long But Funny)

We had plans to go camping with 2 other families (call them the Smiths and the Adams). The Adams had to cancel but still planned to come up on Saturday night for dinner. Mrs. Smith told me on Thursday that it would be nice to make a birthday cake for Mr. Adams and that we could celebrate when they came up for dinner. (We were leaving the next day on Friday!) Well, I figured I'd do something fun for him. He's a painter, so I found a great b+w image to use as an fbct. It took a while because I've got 2 small children and I ended up staying up until midnight to finish it on Thursday because my 3 year old wouldn't go to sleep. Well, I got it all put together Friday morning, and it came out great! I called Mrs. Adams and asked her to bring it up with them on Saturday. I put it in a box and even taped it so she wouldn't look at it. I wanted to surprise them all.
When they came up, we realized that we didn't have anywhere to store the cake until dinner, and it was HOT (over 100) where we were camping. Mr. Adams came up with the idea to put the cake (in the box) under my sleeping bag because it would insulate the cake. (He still hadn't seen it and didn't know that it was a birthday cake for him.) At that point, I couldn't stand not showing Mrs. Adams the cake (we're great friends), so I called her into the tent to show her. Her 22 year old daughter said she wanted to see it too. They loved it! I was soooo excited to show Mr. Adams!
About 3 hours later, my DH called me over to the tent in a really concerned voice. He said, "I don't know what happened to your cake, but take a look." I lifted up the sleeping bag, and there was the box, squashed flat with a big grease stain showing through. I was stunned! As I lifted up the cover of the box, it took a minute to realize that the entire cake had been squashed flat and now the top was stuck to the top of the box. The bottom layer of the cake was still in the bottom of the box. My mind raced as I tried to figure out what had happened. I wondered had I done this without realizing it??? Had one of my kids??? Mrs. Adams came rushing to the tent to see what was wrong. I told her and she was horrified. We scrambled to figure out what happend. My DH and I had gone to take a shower, but Mrs. Adams assured me that my kids hadn't been in the tent. Then, her daughter got a seriously shocked and look on her face. She said, "You mean the cake was under the sleeping bag!!! I went in there and sat down to change my shoes when we went down to the creek!" At that point, I started laughing so much I had to walk away.
She was soooo upset, but I and her mother thought it was so incredibly funny. She said, "But all that work that went into it!"
"It's only cake." I told her. And, I did take a picture of it before it was smashed, of course! So, no worries. Her mother and father thought it was hysterical. They loved the new family story they'll have to tell for years to come.
We ended up putting the cake on the table (in the box) and sticking a flaming marshmallow stuck on skewer in it as a candle. Everyone took a bite, loved it, and said goodbye the the thoroughly smashed cake. I won't go into the jokes that were made about which parts of the cake to avoid due to how she sat on it, but it was funny!
See the pics for yourselves and see if you wouldn't have laughed yourselves silly too! Oh, and the insulation idea really worked. THe cake was still cool!

Oh no! I'm glad you were in such a good humor! I would have been so bummed! Haha, no pun intended! =)
great cake
great story
and the parents have one more "oh and did we tell you about the time..." story for when she brings a new boyfriend home (...hee...hee... ah sweet revenge!)
Ditto what Doug said and I would add a great attitude by you! Some people would have been very upset that their 'masterpiece' was destroyed but it is just cake.

Ooooh, that makes it one better because her boyfriend was there when it happened! Didn't even think about that angle of things. Hee Hee.

Haha thats so funny...I would have absoulty DIED if I were her and had sat on your cake!! Im so glad everyone was able to laugh about it....hehe
That was an absolutely great looking cake, it also looked quite delicious despite being sat on.
That cake was great before it was smooshed.
I'm sure you'll get a lotta laughs outta that story, too~!
And you have the picture to show for it,........
I am totally impressed by your positive attitude. If this ever happens to me I will remember this and hope to handle it with as much grace as you did. Love the story!!!
That was a great cake! Did you say that was a FBCT? What a good sport you are...lol...
Funny story! I actually had one of my cake sat on too, but it wasn't quite that extreme. It was a small baby cake and the 5 year old brother sat on one side of it while I was there visiting. We didn't notice until after he stood up and had icing all over his pants...whoops!

Yes, it was an FBCT. I couldn't help but laugh at this one...my poor DH thought that I would be steaming mad! I don't know why, but it just struck me as so incredibly funny. Even funnier was the fact that she said she never felt anything when she sat down -- my sleeping bag was on an air matress. I'll take that as a compliment that my cake was light and airy!

Oh My! If we could all be like you and laugh about our disaster cakes! I do know that your story just gave me a great laugh. You are so right... at the end of the day.... it's just cake!
Thank you so much for posting-my hubby and I both had a good laugh. I wouldn't have laughed if you hadn't!! It was a really great looking cake!
the cake looked great!!!!! but funny story thanks for sharing, I'm sure she'll get reminders for almost all her life now, everytime she'll be in presence of a cake!!!

i totally agree......i just don't think it's funny , i think it's sad, i guess i feel for the girl that ruined it (& you)---okay so it's kinda funny & you were so right, it's just cake--yummy
That's hilarious! You were a great sport about it, I'm sure the look on that poor girls face was priceless. I can't imagine how bad I would feel if it were me that had sat on it!
I have to say that I wouldn't have laughedabout the situation until after I had a good cry. I applaud your attitude about the whole thing!
I think I would have cried first too!!! And then maybe laughed later..... although I might have flew into a rage too.... good thing it hasn't happened yet!!! I'll pray it never does!
What was the pink stuff in the cake? It looked like it was swirled throughout - or was that just frosting and it just looked that way after it was "smooshed" ? Did it still taste good? Did he get to see the pictures so he could really appreciate what you made for his birthday? I hope so!

If I weren't such good friends with her mom and her (not to mention next door neighbors), I wouldn't have cracked up laughing...but we are really great friends -- really like family, so it truly wasn't sad at all. Yes, she felt bad, but I would have felt even worse if she came away feeling like she had completely devastated me. It wasn't a wedding cake, it was something I chose to do for her dad (as a gift), and so in the end, it really wasn't the end of the world. Everyone got a good laugh and nobody came away feeling bad.
FOLLOW UP -- I gave her dad a copy of the before picture, and he has since hung it in his garage above his work station.
So, as the BARD would say, "All's well that ends well" -- oops, didn't mean to pun with "ends well", but that just struck me as funny too.

The filling was raspberry buttercream -- that was the pink stuff. It tasted great, actually. Her mom's dad was a caterer, so her mom actually cut him the only real piece she could. It came from the top corner. So he had a little bit more than everyone else. I can only guess that the swirled effect came from the way she squished it around while tying her shoes! I was amazed that the cake wasn't more out of alignment.
Yes, he did get to see the before picture. He was really touched.
