So I'm sitting in the social hall at church (big pot luck tyo welcome our new pastor) and my friends daughter ambles over to check out the chocolate fountain I'm guarding from the kids. She just got engaged and tells me that she is considering asking me to do her wedding cake. Great, I think, I'd love to do a wedding cake. I sit her down and we chat a bit about her engagement and she springs what she wants on me..... one main cake and 14 sattelite cakes, including the stairs and fountain. I looked at her and asked her if she was joking and she was DEAD
SERIOUS!!! I asked her what country she was inviting and she just said that she was invitng her church family as well as her family family. I thanked her for her consideration and told that for my first wedding cake that really would be too much for me, but I would be happy to do her shower cake for her. She left and I gave a HUGE sigh!

ODG...you made a great decision not to do it. I don't think she is very familiar with servings, etc.

That is insane. Be proud of yourself for knowing when to say no. I find myself feeling like I should always say yes and then I am working like a crazy person on some insane cake that I am making no money on.

what are satellite cakes?? I can't picture what she wanted.... although I know one big cake and 14 others are a little too much! Even when you invite your church - not EVERYONE will show up - and not everyone loves cake (how dare they not like cake, but anyway!) That just seems nuts. I hope she changes her mind when she figures out what the cost of that kind of cake would be!

Wouldn't be surprised if she comes back once she is faced with reality of servings, costs, etc. She is probably still at the dreamy stage of planning.

Actually, if they were one layer cakes that were torted, it would almost be equal to a large double layered and torted cake.

It would just have a different, more expansive "look."

Did that make sense?

Another spin on this is, maybe a large "main" wedding cake, and then 14 satellite cakes as "centerpiece cakes" for the tables at the reception? You know, like a cake at each table, to be cut for those at that table? THAT would be kinda cool...

That is cleaver thinking, that has to be what that lady wanted. Otherwise it makes no sense.

Although even if we are talking about 8 in cakes, I wouldn't know where to store all those cakes and it would take me multiple trips to get to the site.

Well actually, she is the oldest of 12 kids, so yeah, the army it is! Her family is also heavily involved with the boy scouts at the council level, so I'm sure there will be loads ov invites out that way. But anyway, this girls tends to get what she wants because she does do a lot for her mother as far as the younger kids go and her mother is extremely giving towards all of the kids juset shy of spoiling them.

Why 14 exactly? Seems an odd number

My guess would be it represents her family (oldest of 12 plus parents). But that's just my guess. And what about HIS family if I'm right?

And although it would be cool to have a cake at each table, she did mention she wanted the staircases from the main cake to the satellite cakes - so that's probably not what she has in mind.

First, how could someone even arrange 14 satellite cakes with a main cake, fountain and staircases. I can't figure out how many tables you would need for such a congomeration of stuff.

No matter how you look at it, it's a LOT of work.
I would talk with the young lady again and find out exactly how many she expected. If only 200 - 300, you could do 'dummy' cakes to give the extravagant display she wants.
But then, like we've all said, it's a tremendous amount of work and takes a lot of space.
Take on a smaller project for your first wedding cake so you can ENJOY doing it.

A large cake and 14 satellites with stairs...I don't like the image that I am getting in my head....kinda ufo like! But face it ladies sometimes the hardest part of the job is doing a cake that you particularly would not have chosen!! The bride is the boss here!! I must agree that it is a lot to take on for your first one!! And even if you did do dummies...the foams cost almost as much as real cake and I find harder to decorate...what do you charge?? I am glad I don't have to even consider making this one!!

One more question? If you did do centerpiece cakes and in different flavors...wouldn't that mean the quest would possibly have to leave their table to get their favorite? Who would cut them? Can you tell I am new at this too???

This is not me trying to start drama. Yes, the bride is the boss, but as semi-professional to professional cake decorators it's our job to keep the bride happy and grounded in reality. She won't be happy if her cake person agrees to make 14 satellite cakes and a four-tier centerpiece cake and then shows up with 15 badly done cakes or just half of the order. If you KNOW you're not going to be able to fulfill the bride's vision, you're much better off telling her she needs to go elsewhere (like a major bakery with a staff of 200) or suggesting other cakes that are closer to the realm of what's possible.
