Is everyone putting every cake in a box? I do a lot of 3D cakes and some just won't fit in any cake boxes that I have ever heard of. I had a customer complain that her cake was not in a box but to accomodate her big bow, the box would have had to been huge. Some cake boxes can damage your cake, ya know?
Any thoughts or advice??
All of the cakes I have done has fit into a box. The top isn't always closed, usually just laying over or propped up somehow. I'm sure not everyone uses boxes. Let's see.
I always box my cakes, but sometimes I don't close the lid. If I have a bowed or 3d cake, then I'll either remove the top or I'll partially close it and tape it propped open. Make sense? Even if your box is much larger, you can cut a strip of non-slip material and put it under the cake board, but I think a box is always a good idea, especially when customers are picking up their cake.
I found "a box for everything" at The UPS Store locally.
They have cube boxes for about 2.00 and up, 10 x 10 x 10, 12 x 12 x 12, 14 x 14 x 14 and so on. You could find a box for just about anything if you have that store available.
No more of that 10 x 10 x 6 stuff...that never works!
Put it in a tall box with no lid. That way it is protected from the sides, but the top is open to accomodate the height.
Bakery boxes suck for special cakes....I don't know who thinks that thin white cardboard will hold a 40 lb cake!!
But I agree, I box all my cakes. I like good old fashion moving boxes myself...sometimes I will put them in a bakery box with no lid and then put that box in a moving box. A good tip also is to cut the sides of the box, and then tape it a little so they stay up (I have some I have put velcro on for transporting wedding cakes) so you have like a little garage that you can take the cake out with!
I usually leave my lid open for 3D cakes. I put clear plastic wrap around the opening until the cake is delivered.
I may need to check out the UPS store...this seems like a better idea.
