Need honest opinions here. I made all the flowers and decoration from gumpaste, then found some were too heavy to place where I'd invisioned them, so changed my design as I went. Now I feel like it's missing something. I thought about swiss dots, but will that be too much? Please share your thoughts. I really want to make this cake special for the recipient.
God bless.

I think it is darling the way it is. If you were to add anything, I'd make it simple, maybe in the middle tier only. You could put a row of those pink flowers in the middle like you have on the top tier.

personally, I'd move the butter fly to the middle tier and stick the little halo of flowers with it

(unless you have extra butterfly or two hanging around...then could have on board, middle tier and the smash cake too.)

that crown and "1" are so cute! great color combo

Swiss dots on the middle tier would be absolutely gorgeous! A subtle or the same color as the tier would add just what it needs and keep it from being "too much". I want finished pics please! [email protected]

That was my plan too, but the butterfly is too heavy to stay there. I should have had the forethought to place a toothpick into it's underside, but too late for that now. Maybe I can make another one tonight... don't have to deliver this until tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the compliments!

is butterfly chocolate?

if so, HOT fork tine/potato nail/metal skewer (you get the idea) will make a nice little hole or two for the thoothpick.

tho' there is something nice about sets of threes when decorating.

All the accents are gumpaste.

I hear you about the three's. Maybe I should consider that. I might as well make two more. I'm planning on remaking my "Y" anyway as Macey looks like Macery. Also now that the cake is done I can better shape the lower half of the letter. Wasn't sure how to do that beforehand.

I think it's adorable just the way it is.

Personally, I think 3 butterflies will take away from the simplicity of it. I love the solitary little butterfly sitting on the board.

If you want to add anything, I think the swiss dots on the middle layer (and maybe on the smash cake to match) would be enough to give it that extra oomph you think it's missing.

Cute colors, too!

Your cakes are precious! I would be thrilled to have such a wonderful cake for my daughter's 1st b-day. If you really feel that something is missing and want to add something I would do swiss dots in the middle and on the smash cake but I think it's great the way it is.

I think it's perfect just the way it is!

In my experience, as soon as I start to think "It still needs something"........ it doesn't and you should just leave it alone!!!!

I've made a second butterfly and once it's dry plan to place it center on center tier. I think once I've done that I'll call these cakes finished. Thanks again to everyone for the recommendations and the compliments. Means a lot!

I made all the accents with gumpaste. When I rolled out the "1" I inserted 2 toothpicks into the bottom. When it dried the toothpicks remained tight in the gumpaste. It was an experiment that seems to be working very well. icon_wink.gif

This was to serve 30. The tiered cake is a 4", 6", and 8" white cake. The 1 layer is a 6" egg free cake. This second cake is for one child who has an allergy.

It is too pretty to eat!!! You did a wonderful job. The gumpaste work is perfect. I like how you did the name off the cake...very original. The scattered dots do make it better.

Congrats! thumbs_up.gif

The frosting is just a buttercream recipe that uses equal parts butter and shortening. I've never been able to get down how to smooth my frosting nicely like so many of you do. So, that's my only beef with this cake. I tried both the Viva method and the hot spatula method and yet my cakes are far from smooth. Maybe one of these days. icon_rolleyes.gif

I'm worried about traveling with this. The top tier is very soft because it's a 4" cut down from a 6". Not as stable when you remove the outer crust... or whatever you want to call it! Hoping I don't have a disaster in the making.

I think it's absolutley lovely.....but as for that middle tier...how about two thin bands of coordinating fondant, or mmf...close together...to resemble ribbon going around?

If i were the recipient of this cake, i'd be amazed...so no matter what you do at this point...it's already going to be so appreciated
