Ok i waslooking on the wilton web site to figure out how much batter and icing i will need for my sons cake. Im making the tank cake. According to their site its says you need 7 1/2 cups of icing to ice and decorate a 2 layer 12 inch square cake. obviously there wont be any flowers or borders on the cake so in reality i wouldnt need the 7 1/2 cups right????? i am making my list of supplies i need to get and want to make sure i get enough icing but dont want to waste my money buying any extra. My son really likes the wiltons ready to use vanilla icing. I dont know why but that is what he wants. Thanks in advance for your help.

I have found that when i do wilton directions, there never seems to be enough icing. I now make at least 1/2 cup more then what they call for. I make my own icing, so to run out when i'm almost finished is very frustrating. Hope all works out for you!!!

I guess if your not making all of the directions that come with a particular cake then you probably won't need as much. You'll have to go with your gut on this one, but I'd always rather be safe then sorry. It takes more time to make or get icing when your not quite finished with a cake then if you already have it on hand. I hope all works out the way you want!!
