I had such high hopes for my first gift package cake......then they all came crashing down when my cake died a slow and painful death. I think the main culprit is that my house was just too warm and my chocolate frosting started to melt, causing my layers to slide around. I had the thing doweled in seven different places. I also think I tried adding too much tissue paper fondant. At one point it looked like the cake was throwing up tissue paper as it was collapsing. The cake was a birthday present for my cousin. It sort of made it to her house. By the time we got there the cake had a "butt" to it and the front of it looked like a blue saggy elephant vomitting tissue paper and stars. a few minutes after we got there the cake "exploded". the one happy thing about this cake is I made my very first bow and was really happy with it. Although it didn't stay looking pretty for more than five minutes, it tasted amazing. it was lemon pound cake with delicious chocolate frosting.

I hope you didn't think I was being rude or mean.

I read

and it really made me laugh.

I do feel your pain though. I know how it feels when a cake just does not go as planned, especially when it is for someone dear to you.

I'm sorry your cake died! I'm sure it looked really nice before it did though! Your bow looks good even after the fact! At least it was for family though, and not a customer!

My great grandmother used to say that the uglier the cake the better it tastes! It still looks good even after the "explosion". I love your bow.

Freddyfl,
I did a wedding cake weekend before last and thank God it turned out beautiful. My son (15 but still has his cute moments!) said at the reception,"Mom, it is kinda sad...that cake took you 5 hours to make beautiful and that man completely destroyed in 5 minutes!!" So true...I try to remember as I am messing with every flaw in my cakes that ultimately the taste is the most important thing!!

LOL. I love how you turned this bad experience into a humorous story!!

My worst experience was trying to make Colette's popcorn bowl cake. I made like 5 cakes before I got one that stuck together (all the rest didn't rise, or they were too soft, or they didn't cook in the middle). I did this elaborate decoration of a basketweave on the side of the cake, and then started doing all the "popcorn" on top - I got finished, turned around.... and the cake cracked in the middle and slowly fell apart....... I was devestated. I had also made a special board that looked like a placemat for the cake...... everything was ruined. I tossed the whole thing out. Sorry I couldn't make a funny story from that, but it's happened to all of us!

The bow did look pretty and good luck on your next cake!!!

It really does look like it was a beautiful cake before that happenned. Your bow is very nice.

I can't imagine what happenned, but it seems you have a good sense of humor about it. That makes all the difference in the world, when you can laugh about it........

my cousin was awesome about it. She said that she loved it and that it was beautiful. She is the sweetest. She said that their birthday cakes are usually just 13x9's with frosting from a can slapped on with crumbs in it, so even my saggy, baggy, bootified cake was a vast improvement over their usual cakes. I was still disappointed in myself, but think I will try it again when the weather cools down. I also will try it using a stiffer icing, maybe a chocolate fudge frosting.

Oh I feel for you. I just made to chocolate cakes with ganache added to the buttercream icing. Both cakes ended up falling apart too.

But, like you, they both had great taste to them. I don't often get to eat my cakes but I did get to try both of these and so I wasn't to unhappy they came crashing down.

It's all how you look at things. Something good can always be found out of something bad.
