Now you got me curious, alaskanmom, how much is a gallon of gas in alaska? We pay about $2.97 in this area (New Hampshire). Kool-Aid is 10 cents a packet, and that is original price, not sale!

well, we get gas cheaper because we have the pipeline and our own refinery. but it is still about $2.81 a gallon... and rising! it's everything else that is expensive. EVERYTHING has to be shipped in on a barge, by truck or on a plane. so what you pay $2 for i pay $2.50. our McDonalds doesn't have a $1 value menu, we have the $1.49 value menu. If you pay $1 for a roll of paper towels we pay $1.39... etc. Wal-Mart tends to be the cheapest place to shop and i noticed their prices are fairly close to that of the lower 48 (or the outside as the rest of the world is called here!) but still can be a bit higher. For example... if we see a pizza hut ad on tv they have a little banner that runs across the bottom with the "alaskan price". if the ad is for a pizza for like $15, we get it for $19. It really sucks. But, being in Alaska is totally worth it. Just today i was coming home from an errand and had to stop (on a 3 lane highway, one of about 3 in anchorage LOL) and had to stop for a moose to wander across the street. they have the right of away, you just have to wait. and believe me they take their time!!!!!!!!!!!!! and then there's the little fact (which blows my brains) that we (anchorage) are the ONLY "city" (we are actually a municipality) in the entire world with a grizzly bear population living in town. we never see them but they are there. we know the areas to avoid. believe me it's a trip. Here are some pics i took of wildlife here. the eagle (we have hundreds was at the dump, the moose in the grass was in our backyard and the moose in the trees was a block from our house. they look friendly but you keep your distance. one or two people are killed by moose every year. these photos were taken from my deck or car.

EVERYTHING up here has to be shipped in. It's crazy expensive. I love Alaska but miss cheap groceries!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow thanks for sharing again that awesome idea of the Koolaid. I will share with the other ladies in my course I class! thumbs_up.gif

I totally feel your pain! Milk on base in Okinawa is 1.98 for a half gallon and it's super pasteurized, it lasts for weeks longer than regular milk. Scary! We constantly get chunky milk and that gets expensive tossing out bad milk since we go through 6 half gallons a week! I take it back now and get an exchange. I think I pay the same prices as you for the veggies. When a typhoon hits and destroys crops, then you're looking at $8 for one head of iceburg lettuce. NO kidding! One year I couldn't even make my zuchinni bread for Christmas because it was ridiculous.

Awesome, I hadn't thought of using it in icing! But I do have a secret...
I make a mean strawberry cake by adding a pouch of strawberry kool-aid to the cake batter icon_biggrin.gif I use cream cheese icing to fill & ice it, and it's my most popular flavour yet! But shhhh...let's keep it to ourselves icon_wink.gif

Yep, I just add it to a white/vanilla cake mix, along with a pack of vanilla pudding and an extra egg. It's super moist and everyone loves the flavour! But I don't tell them how I flavour it icon_lol.gif

Yep, I used Kool-aid to color mmf. It works great and the fondant tastes like laffy taffy. Look at the Elmo cake I just finished, he is mmf with 2 envelopes of cherry Kool-aid.

Cool!! I use strawberry jello, but sometimes it's a bit heavy. I like the kool aid idea!! Thanks

For MMF, do you just add the powder and mix it in, or disolve it first?

After I made the mmf I let it sit over night then the next day I kneaded in the kool-aid 1 envelope at a time. I thought it worked out great...and tastes great!

tgirl22: I live in Mass. near the Plaistow, NH border. I haven't seen Kool Aid at 10 cents a packet in years! 15 cents is rock bottom price I've seen in Big Lots (where things are on close out). Shaws regular price is 8 packets for $2.00. I'm waiting for a sale myself.

What store do you go to?

I can hardly wait to try this idea to make red. I use Wilton's no-taste red and find that you have to let it set for some time before the true red begins to happen. It starts out dark pink then later on it's redder. It's not a color you can make right before applying it to the cake.

ok, so after this was posted i thought "this is perfect!" ...so i went and made my red with the kool-aid in it, just as said on here...well mine still came out dark pinkish. I mixed it with wilton no taste red and 1.5pkgs of koolaid to about 3cups of buttercream (i used the buttercream dream recipe) and i let it sit for about 20 hrs. Help! what went wrong with the color? it tasted great-kinda tart but good. What can i do to make it really red next time?

Yes, so did my buttercream...it is still a dark pink. I changed my plans and made the fondant with the kool-aid and had no problems.

I hate how you have to use SO MUCH red to get red! When I make red, I try to make as little as possible ... I don't think I've ever tried to color three cups of icing at a time! I'd take a smaller amount of that dark pink you have, and just keep adding more Wilton's red coloring! My guess is that the problem is the amount of icing you were trying to color. Remember, red + white = pink. Too much white would have to be balanced out by TONS of red!

Jello also works. I know it's more expensive but in a
pinch . . . It doesn't take very much so it doesn't really change the taste of the buttercream.

I live on the other side of NH, near the Winchendon Mass border! Do you know where Keene is? I am over that way. We have a discount grocery store here in town where I get KoolAid packets for 10 cents each. I can't find them there all the time though, it's a game of chance finding things there......when they have them, I can get cake mix for $.89, a dozen eggs for $.99, flavorings for $.39, etc. It's a great store to pick up things I need! I get my paper goods there really cheap, too!

Alaskanmom, I LOVE those pics, thank you for posting those!! If you have other great pics like that I would love to see them!

Alaskanmom, loved the pictures of the eagle and moose. My 4 year old son came in as I was looking at them and said "hey mom, why you looking at that donkey?" I cracked up and he just looked at me. We have donkeys and horses on our farm. He must have thought it looked like a donkey. I will have to admit I have one of the most beautiful views in my whole town. All my neighbors tease me about looking down on them because I live on a hill.

tgirl22: I know OF Keene, but I don't know how to get there. I went to WalMart Superstore in Salem, NH yesterday. They have Pillsbury cake mixes for just 83 cents! I wish they were closer to me! The Koolaid there was 20 cents but they had their "great value" knock-off for 10 cents. I bought one red one to try it in icing.

Oh, and Happy Birthday ...coming up in four days!

Hi!
As a result of this thread, I decided to try adding one small envelope of cherry Kool Aid to a white cake mix. It made the cake a nice rich pink colour, but I found the cake tasted tangy.
Did I do something wrong?? icon_sad.gif
