I want to get some silver luster dust so I can use my airbrush to spray silver. CC only has silver in sparkle dust, and it recommends that you DO NOT use it in airbrushes because the larger grain size can clog the brush. What do you use to airbrush silver? Do you get silver luster dust from somewhere else, or does the sparkel dust work ok in airbrushes?

I was wondering the same thing. I am afraid to use the luster dust in my airbrush because I don't want to ruin it. So I have painting it on instead. But if there is a way to airbrush it on I would love to do it without clogging the airbrush.

Where do you get these from? Is there a shop on line place to buy them? As far as I know, no where in us sells these yet.

A CC member wrote about mixing the dust with eiher vodka or extract in a spray bottle, and reported that it worked fine. I haven't tried it.

Ive used the lemon exstract and luster dust but it doesnt come out as silver as you would like it. You have to do several coats and sometimes it makes it look too thick. I like the way Emma's silver came out on her latest cake. I would try google searching that product and maybe email the company. They probably have someone that distributes to the US or you could probably even buy it from the UK.

If you want to try the luster dust, you can get it at a lot of online suppliers. Cakes by Sam, Sugarcraft, Global Sugar Art, to name a few. It usually costs about $3 for about 2oz. If your doing a wedding cake you will probably have to use like four or five containers to achieve the right color.

The powdered luster dusts are sprayable if you add the exstract or pure grain alcohol to them.

The topic was started by BlueRoseCakes who wanted a sprayable dust. Then Emma recomended the PME lustre sprays, which is only available in the uk. Is that not what we've been discussing so far?

Yes. What I was telling her is that she can use the luster dust powders and mix it with either the with the extract or the alcohol and she can spray it out of an airbrush. Didnt she did say she wanted to be able to use it in her airbrush?

yes, she is also not sure if it'll clog the airbrush, so we are waiting for someone to actually say that they've done it and it's ok.

The best way to get silver through your airbrush is to use New Silver luster dust mixed with either vodka or everclear, it works best if you also mix in some Super Pearl luster dust. I do it all the time and have had no problems. It makes a nice metalic silver.

I believe that is what I was telling her. That is what I use in my airbrush. It does not clog it because its a powder. Its fine and mixes with the extract so it sprays out of the airbrush.
I believe the first thing I wrote was that she might not like it because it will take several coats of it (or passes of the airbrush). This is what most people use. And until the lady in the UK can find out if their is a distributor of the product that she uses, this is an option.

I found this on the sugarcraft.com website:

From Marida: Airmaster. You can airbrush petal dusts through it by adding Everclear to a small bottle of dust. I use the 2 oz. bottles and add one container of the dust. You can practice with the airbrush by using some designed paper towels and filling in the designs. There are also some good books by Carol Faxon on airbrushing.
------
From Gearge F: I mix two containers of luster dust or super pearl dust in a 2 ounce plastic bottle and fill with vodka. Shake very well and each time before you fill the well of the airbrush. I use an Airmaster and turn the pressure up when airbrushing with luster dust/vodka mixtures. Be sure to clean your airbrush well each time you use it. So far, I have not had trouble with the needle clogging.

Here's a spray that's available in the US that has silver, gold and ultra luster http://sdbytracy.com/sprays.htm. It is made of the same luster dust that we get in small tubs. I haven't tried this but ordered some today. Unfortunately, you cannot order online. You can order through email or better yet, through phone. You can look for Emily. Customer service is great too! thumbs_up.gif

Hi, fooby, thanks for sharing this site, it looks like it'll do the same job, the description sounds the same and it's even half the price of what i'm paying here. Do let us know how it comes out and even a picture would be very nice! I think i'm catching the next plane to the US. You guys have so much over there, so many shops and the price is cheaper than what we'd pay here!

Don't know how much you paid, fooby, but there is another place where these can be purchased. And you can do it online, if you want. http://www.sweetnfancy.com/cake.html

Wish I had know that before I placed my order from Icing on the Cake. Heck I could have even taken a ride to Cranford - I used to live two towns over from there.

Hi, sugar plum fairy, they are cheaper on the site you have but unfortunately they don't ship to the UK... I'm sticking with my idea of taking a plane there!

I need to start a new thread and maybe ask about which city has the most sugarcraft shops.. That'll be interesting!
