moving to California cake

I need some ideas for a full sheet cake. The family is moving from NJ to CA.

What about doing a map of the US with a line drawn from NJ to CA. If they're flying, you could put a plane on top or a moving van if they're not.

You could also decorate the cake to look like a moving box. Maybe write CA or Bust on it.

One of the Wilton books has a horshoe cake pan with a outline of one state on one side and the other, on the other side, with things representing the state on each side, across the middle they placed a bridge with a car on it.

I've seen that one too gilpnh .. I was going to suggest the exact same thing .. it's really a cute cake for someone that is relocating icon_smile.gif

I just poured through about 30 of my YB TWICE! found it on page 62 of the 1997 Yearbook.

I saw that cake in the 97 yearbook, but was thinking in the limited sheet mode everyone around here works in. I need a full sheet, but forgot about the up a level trick... a real duh moment on my part. I will place the horseshoe on a rectangular/square base cake and then go to town. Any thoughts?

Great idea! If you're going to do a full sheet, you could put horseshoes together to make a road with a state at each end (piped on the cake). That would fill up the space.

I use 2 12x18 cakes for a full sheet and then trim to fit the box. I thought I would make the shoe with two layers to create the other half. Since I have to trim anyway, if I take the length down on the base cake the proportions will be more pleasing to the eye. If I do a full base and the horseshoes on top, I will have increased the cake by 1/2 and that may be a costly error for future orders.

Additionally, I thought I would cluster the state flowers on the corners of the base cake and skip all the drop ones. I would have substituted the state flowers for the drop ones, but the CA poppy is too big and will look out of place.

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help. The family was very happy. The best part was when the husband said 'Looks like we are eating art today'.

The color may not show so well, but the yellow are CA poppies with piped stamen and the little flowers are NJ violets. The moving van has the family name on it and it is all fondant.
