Can somebody tell me why or how I can keep a cake in the house long enough for it to be appreciated before its eaten? When Im making the batter I've got 4 people - 3 teenagers and 1 supose-to-be-adult - my husband standing around waiting for the bowl even before I put the batter in the pan. THen once the cake comes out Ive got these gremlins trying to take pieces of it off the cake - its like they are on drugs or something - they get this blank stare in their eyes and they cant control themselves and dont let me ice it up or if its a character cake.................Its every person for themselves. I mean it comes right down to tricking one to get his/her piece of cake. I guess I should consider it a complement but I would like a piece MYSELF before its all gone. I see im going to have to start baking in secret but the gremlins will smell it though. uugggghhhh! icon_sad.gif

I was having that problem, then I told everyone that I was no longer going to allow anyone to even have the bowl when I was done mixing. They didnt' believe me... I scraped out as much as I could, then rinsed it out in the sink. Got them to leave me alone! Good Luck!

LOL!! I know just what you mean!!! I have 3 little ones. One will ask if she can lick the bowl. The other the spoon and the 3rd the beaters!! They get upset because I scrape every bit of batter I can off of everything I use!!!!

I do get to ice mine at least, but then every 5 minutes, it's "can I have a piece of cake?" When I say no, they say "Then in 10 minutes can I?"

It's crazy!!!

Start using styrofoam dummies.... LOL no one wants to eat those! And if they try to cut into one.... they may stay away from the cakes from then on until they're sure it's actually cake! icon_biggrin.gificon_lol.gif

I can not tell you how to train the troops to leave the cakes alone. I do know that some how my mother trained my brothers and I to leave uncut cakes alone. I suspect we sabatoged something she had made to take else where. Years later when we were college age adults home for a visit we had all admired (read-drooled over) a cake she had made and left on the kitchen table. After a day and a half she finally asked what was wrong with her cake and why hadn't anyone tried it. Needless to say, it didn't last long after that.

Well, no advice with little ones but your husband should no better! LOL Maybe you can bake 2 at a time so you can decorate one and they can attack the other.

My sons are "adults", or so they say so when I'm making a cake, I will put DO NOT EAT on a large sticky note and that works. If the cakes disappears, it was for a customer and if the note disappears, then they can eat it. My husband only eats the cake if it's a ganache covered chocolate cake, or if it's one of his canned frosting cakes that I make just for him. I know....EWWWWW but he loves that frosting. icon_confused.gif

Get some Pampered Chef silicone spatulas. There won't be any batter left in the bowl icon_rolleyes.gif . My husband hates those things ~ I love them.

Oh, I thought the spatula was for beating back the offenders!!! icon_twisted.gif
Mine somehow know that if it ain't your birthday keepa u hands off!

They don't even remember what a slice of cake on a plate looks like. They only ever eat scraps. Even then, sometimes I am cutting out cake with round cutters and saving them for tastings. I always make extra so I can try it too since I am usually trying out recipes.

My kids say they have to taste them to make sure it's not poisoned. I agree.

Awww...mom, those will be the best memories your kids will have of you. They'll carry your awesome cakes with you the rest of their lives.

One of my most favorite memories of my grandmother is licking the beaters she would let me have after she made a cake mix in this depression era green glass bowl. I remember seeing the cake batter clearly because it was glass and I could look up and just see that yummy batter waiting for me! icon_wink.gif After she passed, I was offered to go through the storage room and pick out some things that belonged to her and I grabbed that bowl and was so thrilled to have it. --Thanks for the memories grandma.
