She wanted elegant looking, square marble-mud cake for her daughter 1st communion.
I told her I do not know of such a cake.there is marble cake or there is mud cake, beside I am making nice continental cakes and why she do not chose one of these well tested onesFriend of hers who bring her to me always order from me and she know my cakes. They are not most gorgeous decorated but they taste just amazing.
No, no, she want marble-mud cake without chocolate.
I suggest, Ill make classical marble cake with cocoa, is that OK?
Yes - she answer, but I want it to be moist. I agree.

I suggest 10 for 50 people, no, no she want 12 OK, I agree, price is going to be 150 AUD
No, no, she said that is toooooo much can you make it for less
She was sitting here for 2 hours already, and I did not have any more patient for her.
120 - I said, that is it! Take or leave!
She agreed

Her husband pick up the cake, pay, said it is very nice and thank you!

She call after half an hour then this is empty cake with no decoration at all, and she would make it better for half an hour time. She ask me why I did not put more flowers in pink, yellow, red and purple???
I said I am sorryI did the best I could, and tot you would like elegant cake, the one for first communion should not be overloaded with all this colours, beside you ask me to look elegant and you told me to do the way I think it is the best. I am sorry for not meet your expectations.

She call on the end of the day, than cake was awful and dry, no taste at all, that was not wet moist cake. I tot I did terrible mistake and miscalculate something. rush at 9PM to her place to check it out.Cake was OK, normal marble cake..I ask her what is she want me to do?
Nothing, nothing she replyI am just disappointedand bla.blayou saidI sad.and so on

She call me today complaining againI just had enough.by now I spend more than 5 hours just talking to her, .I tell her I am sorry and there is nothing any more I can do about it and ask her what is she want me to doright now.She start to talk about dryness againI tell her then I am going to hang up if she do dot said exactly what she want from me.right now She said she want some money back, OK I sad how much? 60AUD (half) OK I said, no problem, do you want cash or cheque? If you want cash come an pick it up, if cheque I am going to post it to you. Before, I want you to wrote me a note saying you asking that money from me, and once you get it you shall not call me or bother me ever again in any way

That is my cake/customer disaster story.what do you think? Was I to rude or just lost it on the end??? What would you do?
Sorry for such a long post.

Not rude at all! She's lucky she's getting some money back. Your cake was lovely.

After all that negotiating in the first place, it sounds to me like she just wanted to find a way to pay less for the cake then she planned.

Let me share this with you -

My brother managed the food section of an entertainment. One day he waited on a couple who complained about the prices of the food, but made two purchases anyway. They decided to try and pay less by eating most of what was made for them, then bringing it back and complaining about it. The manager of the facility came over to settle the disagreement between the couple and my brother, and told the couple that he would replace their meal - this was sandwiches AND french fries! My brother complied with his boss's request, but was not happy about it.

The man went into the lavatory, and did not know that the manager was in a stall in there. The man told another man in there that he just suckered the manager out of a free meal, there was nothing wrong with the first, but they were extra hungry!

From now on, stand firm on your prices, no negotiating. If they don't want to pay the price, then they don't want the quality you can offer them.

Stefi-
I am so sorry for all your wasted time.
Your cake is lovely and very elegant looking.
I agree with the others, she was looking for a way to get a great cake for a cheap price.

That's such a beautiful cake - very elegant and seemingly appropriate for a first communion. If she wanted something with more flowers and color, she should have said so in the first place! I think you did a great job!

Your cake is so beautiful, it is the definition of 'elegant'. Borders and flowers are pretty, but would not have gone right with this cake. I agree with everyone else, this lady didn't want to pay your price for the cake.

You're very generous to refund her half the money. It's probably what I would do, just to get her off my back. Good thinking about getting her to sign a waiver first.

Good luck!

This lady may have thought that because she got you to lower the price, you left stuff off the cake to compensate. You explained perfectly well that you made the cake according to her specifications.

I had a friend of a friend call me because she wanted 2 birthday cakes for that same weekend and she couldn't find a bakery to decorate the cakes the way she wanted. I discussed the design and gave her the price of $40 each. She was saying, can't you just do this or that for less? I told her how the cake was scratch with filling and professionally decorated. She agreed to the cakes but then called me the next day saying that her husband said it was just too much $$$ and she was cancelling the cakes. I told her it was perfectly fine. It was not a problem to cancel. It certainly wasn't worth my time to do it for any less. I didn't owe this woman anything for her kids' birthday.

It's a shame she got any money back for a perfectly beautiful cake, but I can see the value of getting rid of her permanently.

What is with this lady? And what did her friend that recommended you say? There are just some people out there that are never happy no matter what you do. She is probably never satisfied with anything. Either that or like everyone else said, she was just trying to get something for nothing. I think your cake was beautiful and elegant, very appropriate for a first communion.

She could do better in half an hours time ???!!! yea right, Your cake is very elegant. UGH, some people.

Red and purple don't even belong on a communion cake !! IMO, that cake is very well suited to the occasion.

You made a very beautiful cake and it is quite elegant. It is a cake you should be proud of!

That woman should be ashamed of herself! You gave her what she asked for.

I also agree that this lady was looking for a cheaper price... Sooo annyoing and pathetic that people do this "routine" just to get a price lowered...

It sure tells you a lot about people like that.... Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic!!! icon_eek.gif

I agree with everyone. Your cake is very nice, but sometimes people can't understand what goes into making cakes. I can see your wonderful fondant work which is very smooth, the elegant flowers, placement of the items. People think you can just throw a beautiful cake like that together in minutes!! I think you were very generous with offering her half back! But it sounds worth it to get rid of her for good!

Thanks Ladies for all your support and opinions, I appreciate time you took to read my long post and especially effort to wrote your comments.
I was worried then my cake is ugly and I cannot see that.

Luckily the other lady was very happy with what she order from me, call me back next day and thank me for making such a tasty and nice cake for her daughter. She also could not understand what was this fuss with her friend all about.

In any case I feel better now knowing then other people who understand cakes the best think it was OK.

Here is another one I made for happy customer. It was 2 layers of vanilla sponge, walnut sponge in the middle, chocolate-rum cream for filling, and vanilla cream (similar to butter cream, but still different) from outside.

I love the second cake for the happy Customer. That is just gorgeous!

The first cake is also lovely. But I'm in love with the second.

Some people just don't like anything. They are simple never going to be satisfied.

You have a wonderful talent, don't let some grumpy woman discourage you at all!

Yep, that lady was just trying to pull a fast one on you. The cake was beautiful. Some people are pros in finding fault with things, just so that they can get a refund, and not have to spend as much money.

I would never do anything for her again, that's for sure.

I guess it was worth the money to get rid of her, but I would not have refunded a red cent.

Just my 2 cents i m not a professional, i m barely and i mean barely learning but that cake was soooooooooooooo lovely and if i was u i wouldnt give her a dime, if she order the cake in a bakery she can call and say she wasnt please but she wouldnt get a penny, i saw in jugde judy that the custumer wasnt happy and took her to court the baker, so jugde saw the pic and said it look like a nice cake and then the jugde said did u eat the cake and the custumer said yes we had to, THEN THE JUGED SAID NO U DIDNT HAVE TO SHE DIDNT PUT A GUN TO UR HEAD AND MAKE U, IF U ATE IT MUST OF BEEN GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT SO CUSTUMER PAID THE CAKE IN FULL AND PAID FOR THE COURT FEES AND EVERYTHING. Just my 2 cent and keep on making those lovely cakes i hope i get as good as you.
