I was sick to death on Saturday with the cake I had to deliver. My icing never turns out as "unsmooth" as it was that day. I don't know WHAT went wrong. I stacked the 12 and 8 in. tier before I left home. The reception was being held at a TINY and I mean tiny little retro 1950s style resturant in downtown Atl. It's not really the type of place you would choose for a wedding reception, but it did fit the bride and groom's personality. Well, I get there and the guy in charge of the reception clears off a place on the front counter next to the cash register! In the middle of all the traffic....the resturant was packed! He puts my silver plateau on the counter and then proceeds to take the stacked cakes from my DH to place on top of the plateau. Then I must look really dumb and inexperienced because he asked me if I'd figured out how I was going to get the 3rd tier on top of the other cakes. I wanted to smartly tell him that yes, I do this all the time, it's my business, but I just nodded and pulled out my tools to do the transfer. The counter was way high up, so I was standing on my tip toes. I had very little if any icing out of place when i placed the last tier on top, but this guy takes his finger and starts smoothing my icing!!!! I wanted to smack his hand!!! I mean, you don't touch the cake!!! I couldn't get my whole cake in the picture with the plateau and to top it all off the beer cooler is right behind my cake....lovely back ground. So anyway, I'm disappointed with the turn out of this picture and the whole cake in general. I promise that it's not leaning like the picture makes it look like, at least I got that part right! I did hear that the bride and groom loved it, so that part eased my mind a little, but I was just looking forward to having another nice pic to go in my portfolio. This one won't be joining the others. icon_sad.gif

First of all...BEAUTIFUL cake!! icon_surprised.gif Second, I think I would have slapped the you know what from that guy! What nerve!! I did a black and pink cake for my son's friend, and even though it was very inconventional, it was ok. I love the white that yours has in it though. This went into my favs book icon_smile.gif

Great job on the cake!

I would have definetely yelled at the guy!
And then I would have asked, where are your gloves, are your hands even clean? And then I would have said if I wanted your help I would have asked for it..The NERVE of some people. icon_mad.gif
You should have taken your bag of extra icing to fix boo-boos and squeezed all over him...I would have especially done that with the black stuff because it would stain the worst! icon_twisted.gif

BTW- I like your cake- very cool!

I think you did a great job on your cake!!! If you have photo shop you can take the background and color it in a solid color. You can get rid of the cans in the background but I don't find it to be that bad. You see it more then we do cause it's your cake. Don't worry about it.

I was thinking the same thing. I use photofilter (recommended here on CC) You can download it for free and do lots with it. This Pic can be saved. It's a lovely cake!

I am sorry there are idiots in the world! I had a similar incident where I asked the lady of this very interesting reception site to come confirm the cake was set up. (very long sentence!) Well any way she goes and says it looks nice but there is a speck here and oh here is another one and starts touching my sugar bubbles. I about died and wish I could see the look on my face! I wnet on my way and just chalked it up to know it alls! Your cake looks nice and don't worry about the background. I started looking at some my cakes on my website and could see shampoo bottle in one. Must have gone shopping that day! I once saw someones picture that had a emptied pack of cigarettes on the counter! Cake look great!

Photo shop it and put it in the front, put the origional in the back...

Some people might be put off by the beer cooler, but If I were sitting in front of the woman who was in charge of one of the most (maby the most) important parts of my ceremony, knowing that she knew everything and I knew nothing, feeling very intimidated, it would make me feel better to know that she had the ability to make her cakes look great anywhere, and after telling the funny story and loosening up, I would be very appreciative of the fact when great aunt marg walked up and did something horiable, the decorator would handle it with class and I wouldent have to deal with family complaining about a rude cake decorator person....

That being said, I seriously would have hit him! I walked in the kitchen and caught my DH "experimenting with iceing colors that I already had the way I wanted it, I threw a fork at him. Hard. Im not a violent person but there are certain thinks that ya just dont mess with, my kitchen is one of them.

WOW! I think that you did a great job and your cake is definatley portfolio worthy! If the cans in the background really bother you, how about uploading your picture onto some photo editing software and just giving the cake a plain colored background!

Your cake looks great - see how the photoshop cleaned it up! Don't get discouraged - your going to do cakes that aren't your "style" or aren't being displayed as you personally would display them. I know it's frustrating - especially when your trying to build a portfolio! Trust me, I've taken some cakes to some pretty "interesting" places! ... and done some that I just cried over because I thought they were so hideous (but the bride LOVED and was EXACTLY what she wanted!) You have to know that you provided the best quality cake, and the bride is pleased with your work! That's how you get good word of mouth and referrals. You gotta leave it at that!

...and for that guy! How completely rude was he!! I would have definately said something to him! You don't put your fingers in or on anyone's cake!!

Since you would have probably been in jail for "hitting" the guy, keep in mind that a bartender usually has a cup of coffee, or a drink at his side at all times....... I think I would have stuck my finger in it, and STIRRED it up a little for him !! icon_evil.gif

Wow!!! The edited cake looks so awesome adven!!!! Thanks so much!! Something didn't work quite right because I didn't get an email to notify me that someone had replied to my topic. Thanks for all of your encouraging words and for your help! Yeah, i was not at all impressed with the little dude "in charge" of the reception. Whew! Well, at least this doesn't happen all of the time. I can't believe how much the edited picture really changes the way I look at this cake!!!!! One day, I hope to own photo shop...but until then, i really appreciate you all helping me out. icon_biggrin.gif
