I'm looking at the Wilton 2003 book. I was trying to determine serving sizes for my cakes on my web site so I'm looking at the party cake servings sizes in this book. So it says an 8" serves 20 (yeah right). Then I turn to page 8 which is an 8" decorated cake and at the end of the instrucstions it says it serves 10 (more realistic). So what is with that! Talk about confusing!

I think it must be a typo. Look at the 8in Spiderman cake in the same book - same size and gives servings as 20. I tell my customers that an 8in will serve approx 15 party servings (20 wedding), all my cakes are 2 layer and average 4in deep - I scratch bake and all my cakes are moist and rich, so you don't need more than that to feel like you've had a decent piece (even for a cake hog like me!) . Hope that helps!

I like using the older books because the servings are more correct than the new books. They have grossly exagerated the servings on the newer books... don't know why...

I like referring to the 2000 yearbook:

These are cut to 2" x 1" silces.

2 - 8 inch round = 12 servings
2 - 10 inch round = 24 servings
2 - 12 inch round = 30 servings
2 - 14 inch round = 40 servings

I have actually made these cakes up to the 12 inch size, and the servings come out correct to what Wilton says.
